Breeding Araucanas

All I know is what I've read about them, but after reading up here, I'm a little interested myself. I wanted to start a flock of them a few years ago, but decided not to after reading about their "breeding issues". People definitely make them up to be huge issues. I went with Ameraucanas instead, but after a few generations of taking in farm chickens I've got a bunch of big, fluffy, barred mutts now.

I got my Black Breasted Red Araucanas from Ann Charles (Sky Blue Eggs). I absolutely love them! I’ll be breeding them once I have my own property. A word of caution, don’t breed them just because. These are expensive birds and show quality breeders can go for $250 each.

Awww I love the Ameraucana fluff. I am so interested to see how big of an “issue” the breeding “problems” actually are. I don’t mind a low hatch rate if that’s just the way it is. Will be cool to see what happens.

Wow, that one is gorgeous!!! Once I figure out what I end up with from these 10 eggs I think I’ll get some hatching eggs from Sky Blue Egg to diversify the bloodline since I don’t really know where mine came from or how closely related they are, etc. Would you mind elaborating on why not to breed them “just because”. I’d love to hear more from someone with experience. I want to do right by the breed.

I mean don’t breed them to just breed them and try to churn out as many birds as you can to sell them. Breed them because you love the breed and want to see them continue being shown at shows.
I would personally discourage you from getting hatching eggs through the mail of any breed. Better to lay out $200-$300 for a pair of quality Araucanas from one of the breeders on the Facebook group.

Also each picture I posted is a different bird.

I would be grateful to be pointed in the direction of one of those Facebook groups! I’d much rather get a breeding pair than hatching eggs, just didn’t know where to begin looking.
And that makes sense about breeding them. I definitely wouldn’t be doing it for profit or to sell them much at all I don’t think. I’d obviously have to part with some since I don’t have unlimited space but my motives would purely be to learn and preserve the breed. I’d like to learn more about showing in the future. And now that you mention those are two different birds it totally see it! I missed the differences in their tufts at first look.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
