I want to start breeding my watermaels. I am not sure how fertile my rooster Pauli is... But I'd like to try. Bulls eyes on eggs are not that clear to see on his girls eggs. He's got a lovely personality, the hen Roxan too.

I was wondering if someone here with knowledge on breeding and watermaels can give me their idea about my pair. I don't really intend to go to shows, but it would be nice if they were somewhat okay according to the Standard. Also, what kind of chicks would they make? This is quail x Silver quail yes? Someone told me id get mostly quail.

Pauli's tail is not standing straight most of the time, he lets it hang to the left. Is this an issue? Ive never had barbu roosters before, only crosses who made me fall in love with the breed.
Thanks

This cross would produce quail daughters and sons that are an intermediate between silver and gold: silver with a yellowish cast. The boys would appear silver quail as chicks so this would be a sex-linked cross.
You have beautiful birds and your boy is in lovely condition. If his tail has a tendency to always lean in one direction it is an issue because wry tail is a disqualification.

Thanks you!! I'l look into wry tail. It's only a slight leaning though, and when he's alert he can put it straight. Do you know if wry tail is dominant? Or can I still get straight tail roosters? My first batch of chicks would be for me and my best friends' backyard anyway.

The chicks, does it mean you can sex via color? Or is it not visible enough at birth what color they're going to be?

The difference should be visible at hatch.

Wry tail is a recessive trait, which is actually worse than a dominant because birds can carry the trait without you knowing, which is why it's advised not to breed birds with wry tails.

Thanks! I am pretty sure my hen doesnt have the gene because she's from a trustworthy small scale breeder. So if I bred them i'd end up with all carriers of the gene. Which is fine for me if it's for my backyard. They both have lovely characters.

So the conclusion is that if I want to make something sellable and show-able I'd have to get me another rooster.
