breeding black to splash = ???

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong as I certainly don't come anywhere near to specializing in these colors, but if your Black is from a black X blue mating, it carries the blue gene. The Splash is from a blue X blue mating. Put them together and you'd have a chance at blue, black or splash chicks. Only a pure black (from black X black) mated to a splash will produce all blues. Did that make sense?

That's the part I don't understand when I see that in the catalogs.(blue whatever breed, may be black, blue or splash, but will carry the blue gene.) I thought the blue gene was an "in your face" phenotype of gene. If it was present it expressed itself with the blue color???

That was my understanding of the blue color too. It appears to work just like the dun or cream gene in horses. If it is there it expresses itself.

I have never produced any blue chicks from black to black crosses in my flock, even though they each had one blue parent.

So are you saying if it is not blue, it doesn't carry the blue gene?
