Breeding Buff Leghorns

I have heard, but not confirm that Curtis Oakes has Rose comb Buffs. I'm not sure if Dan Honour is still working on them or not, but he's in this thread so hopefully will reply.
WOW!! I have bought my original birds off Mr. Oakes, I've met him at Ohio Nationals. I bought my really, really good pair of R.C. Whites off him, their only problem is the hen laid only 5 eggs this year and 7 eggs last year, and the roo won't even mount her... I also bought my original buffs off of him, all of my birds are descended from him.

If you didn't mind a ~3 year project you could use your RC Whites to make RC Buff.

He said that the white was really hard to get out, and my birds are really old and like I said, she hasn't laid for ages, I think I was wrong, I'm not sure if she laid 3 eggs, and he has never bred. (I really would if I could!)

It would be, that's why it's a multiple year project. But it's always an option since finding RC Buffs, especially of any decent quality might be difficult. RC White's are nowhere near as hard to find, and good ones can be found that might even improve type and size on Buffs. Always a trade off.

I'd try it, but I'm not allowed any more breeds, I'm lucky enough to get the second pen for my pair off R.C.s, I think I've only got that pen because their so good.

I do not have any Rose Comb Buffs anymore only the Single Combs. There are a few around, Fred Zillich from Mo. may still have a few. Breeding a young cockerel with old hens should give you some fertility.Leghorns should be decent layers,as they age perhaps they will lay much less but if of good quality stock they may transmit superior livability and longevity.

Hello. I have 2 of the Danne Honour line of SC Buff Leghorn pullets from Birch Run Farm. Named my favourite Buff "Danni" for Dan + Ann (the breeder) = "Danni." Danni is slightly smaller than our White Leghorn who laid XL snow white eggs. Danni is daintier than the White, calmer, has a much shorter SC that doesn't fall to the side because it's so short, & she lays medium pink eggs. I like the size of her eggs (1.75 oz) rather than the XL (2.5 oz) eggs of the White Leg. Danni is just as prolific a layer as the White but I'm more comfortable w/ the size of her eggs because she is slightly smaller. Because her comb is short I'm comfortable w/ not worrying about frostbite as my White Leg's huge floppy comb tips discolored slightly during the frost - Danni did fine w/ no effect.

The 2nd SC Buff Leg was gifted to a friend for her birthday. She named her "Buffy" (how original) who is exactly like Danni except she's more SQ than Danni. Danni has a huge cushion which causes her Leghorn tail feathers to grow askew whereas Buffy has no cushion but the characteristic sleek Leghorn body in the Buff color. I requested 2 pet quality but Ann sent us one that was SQ. I love the color of these girls. They are one solid Buff from their earlobes, eyes, feathers, legs, down to their toes! It's like watching graceful gold walking across the lawn!

Just wanted to say that should anyone get a SC Buff Leg from a Dan Honour line there isn't the worry of a huge floppy droopy comb over the Buff's eyes. I hope Birch Run never stops breeding these Buffs as hatcheries are discontinuing offering them & Sandhill Preservation had their Buff Leg breeders wiped out along w/ turkeys. It's a shame because they ranked Buff Legs #10 on their top 100 prolific breeds list! Because of that ranking we searched hi & lo to find a Buff Leg breeder & finally discovered a Danne Honour line & were ecstatic!

I sincerely hope more individuals discover this fantastic SC Buff Leg as it is a very beautiful bird physically & temperamentally & hasn't lost the Leghorn reputation for productivity. Our eggs are a pretty pink/tan & we're comfortable w/ the size. There are LF pounds heavier than a Buff Leg who don't lay eggs any larger & don't have the excellent feed-to-egg ratio of a Buff Leg.

We're sold on Buff Legs and hope they stay around for many decades to come! Thank u Dan & Ann - Smiles :)
