Breeding Buff Leghorns

Just checked this thread to see about broody buffs and I couldn't believe it -- others have the same "problem". My favorite buff hen is always on the nest. She's still laying and she quickly scoots away -- not like my Cochins

but I thought Leghorns weren't broody, so it's been a surprise.

Some of the chicks growing out her have lots of smut... but the smut is a pattern (looks like v shapes, kind of like lacing or something else) does anyone knowwhat could cause this? I'll try to get pictures uploaded when I get back from the beach on Saturday

A little pepper in the tail or wing is a minor defect that can be used by mating to a clean solid buff mate.Markings in the back (usually females) is perhaps the pattern gene and is undesired.It could also be the duckwing allele segragating,perhaps with Db.At least it can look much like red ginger.I would suggest to cull it out if possible from Buff.It is hard to see in males,and often comes with green legs.

It could be the pattern gene,hidden in the genotype of some buffs.Perhaps when two doses combine.Those I have seen look more like crude pencilling,or the double/triple lacing,rather than a thick single lace of black.I do not see where it could be of any use.I cull those out and it becomes much less requent appearing in the flock of buffs..

It's a shame and I didnt get any chicks out of him because he was in a seperate conditioning pen. Chris I think was the only member to get chicks from both of my males. THey were in the same pen at the time.

I am in NY state near the Ct.state border.If you need some Large fowl Buff Leghorns ,I have many chicks out now and should have young adults ,late summer,early fall.I have had them now nearly 40 years. Dan Honour
