Hello everyone!
Some of you may have seen my thread/s talking about my idea to do a flock business for bantams, and sell bantam chicks locally since there are no local breeders who do. I'll be working along with a friend who will do the standard fowl side of the business, and we'll be selling mixed ducks and maybe even quail eventually. Of course, we'll start small and see how popular the business becomes, then go from there.
Since were doing this on such a small scale, we wont be getting any certifications or testing, but you have to start somewhere. :D
My question is about genetics. I know absolutely Nothing. All I know is stuff I've picked up from other threads on genetics, and all I can remember is a bit about sex-linking. Is it the rooster or hen who has to be barred haha?! (This sums up my knowledge of genetics 🤣)
I'm interested in doing some sex-linked crosses eventually, but the biggest question is about my pet Cornish X, Doodle and Smudge.
I have 2 hens as I didn't want over-mating, but I'm wondering what I could cross those guys with to get a slower growing meat breed to possibly sell, and raise myself. I thought about crossing them with my Orp/RIR cross rooster, but another poster said they tried a similar cross and got a sustainable breed that was white with red leakage. Ideas as to what to cross them with?
Please give me a quick crash course if you can. Nothing to extensive, but any basics you think I should know I'm happy to learn about. Thanks for explaining it all to me haha!

Whats wrong with breeding them to your orp/RIR if they give you a sustainable cross? do you want to only cross to breeds you have all ready? Does colour matter to you? and the barred one is the hen

Are you asking what to cross the Offspring from the Cornish X + Orp/RIR with?

Or asking what to cross your Cornish X with?

Theres nothing wrong with that at all, but I do want to keep some of the quick growth that the Cornish will provide. Do you think the cross my sustain some of that?
I'm willing to get other breeds so that I can have interesting crosses, but using breeds I already have is nice as well.

Let us know how this turns out, a slightly slower sustainable breed should not be a bad thing. Good luck and we look forward to the pics...
I think I will try the cross anyway, and see what I get. May as well.
I'm interested to see if it grows like a traditional bird or RIR, (since that will be the father) or if its still keeps some of the quick growth rate that the parent birds will give. Any suggestions as to how to keep some of the quick growth would be nice, thats kinda what I'm looking for in this cross. Thanks!

A bit of both. I'm interested to see what you think the cross will produce, and if you have any suggestions as to what to cross them with to sustain some of the quick growth that Doodle and Smudge will produce. Thanks. :D

I'd suggest using Brahma, for a large table bird, or Barred Rock, the Heritage type. You should get something large, & of Moderate growth speed.
You can use these for both.

Good idea, Barred Rock is smart especially since I want to try Sex-linking eventually. I could get a pare, sell pure BR, cross the rooster with Doodle and Smudge and Cross the hen to try Sex-linking. Sounds like a good idea to me.
I think I'll try the to cross them with my rooster as well and just see what I get. Then I can compare the BR mix and the RIR/Orp. I think I have a fun breeding plan coming on. :D Thank you!

Sex linking will work if you cross a Solid colored rooster to a Barred hen.

You're welcome, sounds good.
