Breeding Delawares to the Standard of Perfection

Here is what we use for grain storage ; They are food grade retired olive barrels - I paid $12 each but have seen them much higher. They have a screw on lid with a seal and are air/water tight. I mix DE in the grain as I put it in barrel - For picking up barrels just store four on a 48x48 pallet- strap - and you can pick them up with any forklift type arrangement- I have one that goes on 3 point hitch of our compact tractor http://www.agrisupply.com/pallet-forks-3-point-2000-lb-capacity/p/72511/&sid=&eid=/

Yes I thought so too ! They happen to be one of our customers and were repackaging for retail at that location . They no longer package only ship in the barrels wholesale to packagers. The secret to price is finding who the user is instead of the reseller of the barrels and you usually can buy them a lot cheaper. I bought 12 of them and after I bought them I was at a farm supply store that was selling them for $39 - exact same barrel still had the olive label on it. So let your fingers do the shopping LOL saves money

I figure I should plug a new friend of ours that we have been getting great birds from, Will Morrow at Whitmore Farm in Emmitsburg Md. He has Marans, Ameraucanas, Welsummers, and some excellent Delawares. We have 15 Dels from him, the oldest being 12 weeks now. We are new, (12 weeks ) into the chicken game, so I'm not sure how his stack up to the SOP but I'm sure they are great. He mentioned he sells alot of his birds to show people.

I do know that from the 4 breeds that we've gotten from him, the Dels are my favorite. Super Healthy, super vigorous,and very friendly. I think I could have stuck these little guys out in the grass at a day old, and they would have survived alone!

He hatches every monday, and thru June I think, so check them out!

Hi all, looking at my youngest group of Delawares from Kathyinmo, 8 weeks old, they look very squat and short to me. Seems like their legs should be longer. Here are a few photos, maybe not the best, they are in with a big group of Marans and it was hard to get shots of them individually. I'd like some feedback on their leg length. Thanks!

They look fine to me. I have some 8 week old chicks that I posted on the other Kathy Delaware thread a couple days ago. I think they are so big and round that it seems like they are short.

Yes X2 - when you have bulk it looks like short legs. Its OK as long as the drumsticks are large IMHO
