BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

On a chicken thread someone asked if their chickens can eat grapes, the answers basically were yes if you pick out the moldy ones, deseed and cut them in at least half.  I'm sitting here thinking, that's more effort then I put into eating grapes for me.  My chickens (I have seen w/ my own eyes) swallow mice, snakes, and reptiles whole, and dig through poop and eat the treasures they find in it, I just bet they can handle a whole grape w/ the seeds in it!!!!! lol

My last flock rooster absolutely loved grapes. He would sprint (well, as much as a red broiler can sprint) to them and call the girls over as he tried to eat them all. He really liked the fermented ones from our wine mash and if one was too sour, he'd shale his head back and forth like little kids do when you give them lemon lol

I grow seeded concord grapes. My one free range cockerel has not died yet. He ate everyone he could reach.

Our grapes are infected with something, the leaves are yellow with purple spots and my SO's grandpappy hasn't been taken great care of maintaining them at ALL. I was gonna use the leaves and spare fruit for treats, but I'm replacing the entire arbor and putting in passion fruit come spring time.

I had a visitor to day in my RedStar hen coop. I picked up the lid and dove my hand down to pick up the eggs.

I snatched my hand back and dropped the lid. I was able to grab him by the tail and pull him out. I relocated him 10 miles away.

He was little and only ate one egg.

Please give feedback on their personalities once you've had them for a while, along with details about laying habits and meat quality. I'm really curious about this breed. I've heard widely mixed reviews about them, the least flattering being that they were "...the dumbest birds I've ever seen...", LOL! Personally, I'd love to be able to have a few of many, many breeds for the sake of comparison...just to see if there really is any difference in taste, texture, etc. (You're OCD...and I'm just a nerd.)

Supposedly they lay white eggs. Looks like my Barred Hollands will disappoint and are laying tinted eggs. I'd be very curious to hear if the Sulmtalers do in fact lay white eggs.....

This one is no juvenile ... caught in my trap this morning.

I don't "catch-and-release" because around here, that is called, "Dumping your problem on someone else." Even if I took it to the state forest, I'll bet she'll be back in a couple nights.

I am so grateful I don't have to deal with possum around here. I've had a hard enough time dealing with hawks, skunks and coyotes!

I managed to butcher the half dozen extra roosters/cockerels this past Saturday, and now I'm preparing to rearrange my current flocks as I clean the respective coops and runs before our fall weather starts. I've also got 13 eggs in the incubator right now...11 of which are Silver Grey Dorking eggs...and it finally dawned on me that I've no idea where I'm going to put this breed once they hatch and grow beyond the cute little chick stage. Oops! Chicken math strikes again!!! So now I'm re-evaluating my entire flock, moving everyone around so I can have designated breeding pens, and basically creating a lot of work for myself. Aaaahhh....the power of chicken addiction!

Yep, possum and raccoon that come to our barn and pens get exterminated here.
I've waged a war this past week on the rat and vole population that has exploded in our tri-county area. The rats are eating the feed from the feeders and I was only putting out a one day supply in each pen. These varmits will attack and eat a baby chick if they can get to it. Rat shot is hard to find due to the 22 ammo shortage. Finally found some and we are 34 down so far.
The abundant mice population responds to TomCat poison in special chicken proof containers.
