BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I only raise LF Sulmtaler and from the reading I've been able to do (translating literature from German/Austrian is a paaaaaaaaain), the bantam Sulms are more for exhibition, and as far as I know, bantam Sulms are mostly located in the UK and Germany for exhibition, not sure how much of the bantam development went into keeping the famous meat flavor that the Large Fowl have had historically.

Hey, I have a question for all of you;

Has any one tried to breed for bantam meat birds? For those with smaller families or just prefer smaller in general. I have seen Sumlater (so miss spelled that) bantams in a book of mind but I am not sure if they actually are bred with meat like quality.

Pretty much all of the Mediterranean breeds are perfect for fast production of smaller quantities of meat.

Anyone watching what is happening with the wind chill from Winter Storm Decima? Suppose to get to -10to -20 tonight. And this is why the White Chanteclers are so right for western PA. If I still had the Sussex now, a whole season's worth of combs would be frostbiting and turning back right about now. All that work ruined. next winter will be different. The Chanties will be here in Aug. and winter will no longer be a problem.
I do believe the sun is entering a "winter" that these extremely cold episodes will continue in the winter for at least the next 8 years.
Best,
Karen

-1F windchill here today and my birds are out foraging through the leaves and acting like it's 60 out there. Went up last night to give them their annual winter coat of castor oil to the combs, wattles and legs and that should about do it. The coop is currently 10 degrees warmer than outside temps, at roost height, and was last night as well.

We'll see what tonight's even colder temps will yield. Looks like winter has finally arrived!!

The BJG from Labor day hatch are out sitting under a tractor on the axle, about the only spot w/- snow... good spot since the hawk is out.
The turkeys went over and looked at the frozen pumpkins, I brought one in to thaw. .. The rest looked around and went back in.

Oh my gosh! You guys have quite the battle going on with Mother Nature!

I love AZ in winter. I know coming May - August I'll be hating the intense heat, but right now I'm very grateful for AZ winters. (It's supposed to reach 82* here today.)

Someone on here likes the same, smaller birds. Dark cornish bantam crossed with naked neck bantam seems like it would be ideal. Most bantams do lay good, probably not the dark cornish but others do, just have smaller eggs.
