BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Hope you all don't mind if I lurk here and follow along. Quite interested in learning from you all.

Hey, everyone - anyone starting their grow outs on cat kibble yet? I've got some feather pickers in one of my growout pens - not sure who it is, but it's pretty bad. And there are enough feathers around to guess that I should have anticipated.

Soaked cat food coming out tomorrow for Puppy's kids (and I'll do it for Tank's kids because they're molting too, though no feather picking). I'm tempted to just do it for everyone, because my poor grown up girls are starting to look awfully ragged and overbred.

(BTW - I have been posting weights and chart on the Naked Neck thread mostly - I will organized/summarize them to post over here soon. I've gotten some very promising results with both the NN x GNH cross and the S&G broiler NNs.)

Just read a scientific on study online that says feather picking can be eased by providing probiotics to the chicks
. because it has good protein in it and feathers are protein.

Hmmmm.. They got probiotics early on, but as I don't ferment my feed, they'd need it in their water now, and it's a bit too much to change the big water thing out in the grow out pen every 12 hours (was easier in the brooder). I may try it anyway though - thanks for the tip.

Cat food soaked over night in yogurt, perhaps?

Ironically I'm trying this right now with my older birds. A few of them have suddenly become fairly determined feather pickers. They also happen to be the same ones with vent gleet. I'm thinking their intestinal bacteria went outta whack, creating "cravings".....just like my incessant craving for chocolate.
