BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Oh call me the old stick in the mud. I like to feed my birds fresh green spouted "green feed".
I think it's more "natural". I know that takes a tiny bit of planning but once one gets the
program going ...in 5 days they can have preptetual fresh "green feed" for the birds.
Best,
Karen
But I can do that by opening the coop door . . . LOL.

I did not mean the comment as negative. Just kidding with you.
I wasn't being negative either. Just factual, smile.
If anyone knows fiestafeathers would you tell her to get in touch
with me? Diane is in TX and we seem to be playing internet tag
trying to communicate by email.
Thanks,
Karen

Is it you that has the orchard or someone else?
With cattle and now a pig...are you planning to free range? I wonder if it would be less work to just let them follow the cows rather than lugging tractors around.

I have a couple of apple trees and we just picked peaches off of my two peach trees but no 'orchard'. I do graze my dairy cows.

I had mentioned somewhere that a hawk lives in the area. The only time he hinted at causing a problem is the day I moved my one batch of chicks to the garage in my covered brooder in late March. He flew out when I entered the garage but I never saw him again until tonight. Tonight I went to start milking and saw him covered in manure at my manure pit. I looked in the pit and saw a chicken that was stuck but alive. I fished her out and put her in the chicken yard. After milking I went to close the cows in the pasture and saw this head sticking up out of the manure in the pit. Here it's another chicken so I fish her out but I have to take off my shoes and go in the manure a little to get her. So free range won't work let alone having a small run for chickens right next to my barn. Also I feel moving a chicken tractor right next to the house is easier than getting the utility vehicle and going into the pasture which involves opening and closing a few wires behind you. Sure I'd love to have them eating bugs, fly larva and picking through poop. But, at this time it doesn't seem to fit into my schedule.

But glad the birds are ok.

Is electronet a possible solution?

I would be interested in first-hand accounts of its effectiveness (or lack thereof). I'm trying to figure out how to create the largest amount of space for the least amount of $. Using electronet for large rotating paddocks is an option I'm considering. Perhaps even in conjunction with one or more side of permanent fence.
