BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

If sexing is important why go for a sex linked variety? Why not go for an autosexed variety instead?

That's what we did and we've been thrilled with them.

Did you get biefelders?

Uh no. I have a genetic project I've been working on for some time. Improved Rhodebars. They are basically standard bred RIR which are barred and 100% autosexable. Heavy laying and dress weights over 7 lbs.

Is there a problem with biefelders?

I hatched rhodebars for papabrooder. They hatched very nicely.

No problem with biefelders at all. Never owned any. They are a totally different set of genetics from the Rhodebars. Since I have RIR I went with the Rhodebars since the availability of my reds was an obvious road to improvement for my Rhodebars. The foundation Rhodebars were in dire need.

Yes, they looked washed out.

I will look for pictures of yours.

You will only find single barred pics on here. I haven't taken any recent pics. I promised Marvin id do that after the Knoxville show this weekend.
These were both taken last spring... I have BC1a and BC1b generations now on the ground.

this is one of my F1 pullets

No. Those are just stepping stone birds. Rhodebar males must be double barred. And both still need way to much improvement in type to be shown. Tall sets are still too high, they need more type and brick shape, etc. I'm showing RC RIR this weekend.

You are getting there. Are you breeding to the British standard for them?

No, I'm breeding to the rir sop except for barring and autosexing (which is almost the same thing). The Redbars standard is more vague.
I should have said "correct" barring. There are those who would like to show the single barred cocks because they have richer color. Sorry... Not correct. Some will argue this point but if it isn't double barred it won't produced autosexed chicks 100% of the time which means it isn't pure Rhodebar.
A cock I bred last year competed in some 4-H competitions here and did quite well - even made the local newspaper. The child who owns him really likes them and that's what matters. Now if folks will just quit selling eggs without breeding first. Too many do not have pure Rhodebars and are seeking eggs as of they do. The chicks are frequently not autosexable and are all various colors.
I think the breed will come along nicely if we can right the ship of the oops made by GFF (at least they've owned up to those mistakes and we know what closets to look for the skeletons in). But too many people are breeding without understanding and realizing that what they have is not Rhodebars.
