BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

you're making me miss the trips down south... Sorry the only thing I know about cattle are hamburgers, steak and bbq. Those cattle do look cool though.

Have fun!

My property in Brasil is relatively near two fresh water rivers and fish/seafood is a major component in the restaurant fare around Porto Alegra but even the most renown place for seafood/fresh water fishes will have BEEF as a major part of their menu.

I kinda' miss the beef cattle we sold out a while back. Who knows, perhaps when we get back, I might consider a smaller breed that does well on grass feed without much or any grain.

What do you folks think of Scottish Highland cattle?
Dexter cattle do what you want. They are geared for eating only grass. I have had some steaks and a roast from Dexters--they were very tasty!

Please excutse me everyone. I know this posting is well off topic.

If I understand you correctly, you are in Brazil which has a tropical climate. Scottish Highland Cattle are adapted to a very cold climate and with their heavy coats I'd be concerned about heat stress. Dexters might have similar problems but it might help if you were to raise the red type. Red cattle tend to be more heat resistant. A better option might be to cross a Loala (Australian Lowline Angus) bull on zebu cows to get something more like a mini Brahman with more appropriate heat and parasite tolerance.

Scottish Highland cattle are very hardy, do well with little and are extremely handsome. Much like the Scots :)
Dexter cattle may suit your purposes better. But won't make as nice a rug.

No,No,...we're not yet in Brasil....but will be heading there sooner than later for vacation. We live in mountainous West Virginia...U.S.A.

I'm really bummed. My favorite Easter Egger pullet has suddenly turned lethargic and is refusing food and water. Not a good sign. I have her isolated in a dog crate here in the house, but I'm not holding out much hope that she'll improve.

So far in this group of frizzled and smooth Easter Eggers that I hatced I have three birds with severely crooked inner toes, one pullet that died while egg-bound, a butchered cockerel that had only one testicle, and now this mysterious septicemia. So much for breeding any of these birds! I'm thinking there are some significant genetic weaknesses at play.

My sister has them and they are nearly impossible to sell for any good price down at the beef auction. Can only sell those to other people wanting to raise and breed Highlands, which is a pretty small customer base.

You might get past that with getting simple black Galloways that resemble a furry medium sized black Angus and will still sell similarly down at the stock pens. Galloways have the same hardy aspects as the Highlands but are polled and the right color for the current market trend.

My only interest would be for personal home consumption. Thanks a lot for the pics and info!!

I finally got to the end of this thread! I've been reading it for quite a while now! I don't currently have any birds, but I've been reading this site top to bottom for probably around a year getting ready for when I get some birds... But... would I be welcome to talk about Quail? that's what I am planning on getting first, and probably some Muscovys to keep the bugs down. I work at a company that is owned by another company in Japan and there are a lot of homesick Japanese I could sell Quail eggs to on a regular basis, plus, they don't take up as much room as chickens and can be stacked...

I also wanted to comment about the goat... I have a really funny memory of going to dinner at a house owned by people that had goats, they bottle raised the kids and as a little kid, I wanted to go down and see the baby goats... well, mom took me down there and apparently she is quite the attractive female goat herself... their billy was chasing me away from her, mounting her, and even peed on here to show his undying love! Yeah, all before dinner... So, my mom ended up wearing a bathrobe to dinner after she showered and while her clothes were in the washing machine!
