BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

It looks like I'll be butchering my first hen for dinner. The largest (and meanest) of my Dorking mixes, Zephyr, has turned into an egg eater. It started when she laid a fairy egg without a shell and pecked it to see what it was. Since then I've discovered multiple pecked eggs and caught her with yolk on her beak yesterday. Today she's going from one nesting box to the next, undoubtedly searching for eggs to eat, and I already snatched one away from her just after she pecked the end of it. If she weren't so dang quick (and if I weren't so dang slow), I'd throw her in the isolation pen right now, but instead I'll be putting her there tonight when she's easier to remove from her roost. Tomorrow I butcher another extra NN cockerel, and Saturday I'll probably butcher Zephyr.

At least I never liked her. And I'll finally get a taste of some Dorking-ish meat.

The only thing better (prettier) then a naked neck, is a naked neck w/ a hat

Well ....................................... maybe a naked neck w/ a beard

Bwahahahhaha Love these pictures. Necked necks will be the first I order. Not sure what's up here in Vancouver. I'm sure lots of good quality.

On another note, Jenny set me an appt to go see goat milking on Tues. Nice little tour of raw milk farming. I'm gonna do it. Jenny said we are so different. She gave me a special small package of home made goat cheese. $29 a pound. She said I tasted it and thought I'll look for a sale and buy some more. You are I want to get a goat and make my own cheese. Who's crazy.

I don't like the naked necks there creepy looking
Me either! How could mother nature play such an evil trick on such a fantastic bird. It truly does have benefits but if looks could kill, well-- what can I say.

To each his/her own. I find them really beautiful and they are my very favorites. If I had to choose only one breed tomorrow, there would be no question, no hesitation.

Here's something interesting that you don't understand until you actually have one - the skin on their necks (especially when they are young) is as soft and smooth and warm as a baby's skin. (See my avatar). Even when they are older, and the skin gets tougher, it's still soft and warm. Right now I am plucking my Naked Neck rooster Tank from on top of the SS coop roof each night. While we walk back to his sleeping area, he always lays his head on my shoulder, looking over my shoulder (like a child would), and I always lean my cheek down to sneak a little cuddle - so warm and soft. I love love love love them so much.

Everything is better with a Naked Neck!!!! (You know those other breeds I have coming? They're mostly for crossing with Naked necks.

If the real __it ever hits the fan, those who keep Naked Neck chickens will be among the fortunate, no matter where they live. I live in an extremely harsh climate and should I be able to own only one breed, Naked Necks it would be...I say this after being around them in horrifically cold and hellacious weather...they have stood the test.
You are SO right. Toughest, yet most personable birds...

Edit: Sorry - changed my avatar to Paula, the CL I just lost. I meant this photo:
