BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

At 50 I am wearing 2 coats and a sweater! (not exaggerating), my bed has multiple blankets year round. You know how it is courtesy to take someone's coat when they come to your home, well .............. you'll pry my coat out of my cold dead hands!!!!! ( I might let you take the top one if I have one on under it(

Roada it gets that cold here too, it is just when it gets below 50 I think I'm about to die from cold.
Kassandra, I had to move from Missouri to South Georgia. I have Raynaud's (ray-NOHZ) disease that causes some areas of your body, such as your fingers and toes, to feel numb and cold in response to cold temperatures or stress. When it's 50 I'm wearing jackets! I would have white feet and fingers. I was made to wash the sows outside in 18 degree weather. Not so fun when they run by you and leave you with a cold wet leg. I finally convinced the guys to let me wash them inside - a no brainer.

K, that must be miserable!!! Any chance you have Raynauds Disease?

I have thought about getting tested. I just went on thyroid meds so I'm giving that a chance to see if it makes any diff. But I will likely see about testing for Raynauds soon.

I have thought for a while I might have Raynaud's. I have always (my youngest childhood memories) been very very sensitive to the cold. I rarely ever "blanch" so didn't think it was R.D. but have recently learned not every one has "blanching". My thyroid condition is also auto immune, so it would not be surprising to have other A.I. such as R.D.

Did the move help w/ your symptoms?

We go from subzero -20 below to 95+ in the summer...Been a easy winter this yr though, last couple were brutal.
Didn't have to shovel snow once this yr. Few weeks were zero few were hot, 40-50! I was still eating fresh kale and giving chickens some from the garden in Dec. Sometime in Jan deer decided to wipe out a 3'×24' 2' tall patch in one night..

I don't put in that much that it's like bark brown it's like a really light brown to like a mason jar waterer so probably about less than half of one teaspoon

Molasses is a good source of some minerals, but it's not as "complete" as a vitamin supplement- although some may argue that the manufactured vitamins aren't nearly as good as the real thing. Chickens seem to like sweet things so perhaps the chicks do drink more water that way. I personally have not heard that it's a laxative. Although, if you ate a lot of molasses cookies all at once, maybe-?

Edit- did some research, seems like I'm the only one who hasn't heard that about molasses. Now I know.

I only use it for like the first two to three days but no longer
@Roada Red

You need to pay attention to what you are being told on this thread. The people that post on here know what they are talking about. If they tell you not to give baby chicks a laxative, Then stop doing it! Listen to their experience and wisdom. That is how we learn!

I could NEVER survive your winters, seriously.  I am convinced every year I won't survive ours.  I am nearly always cold.  I bring a coat to work w/ me all year long including our summers of 100+ degrees b/c of air conditioning inside.
I hear you there I love the heat but I have so much family here if it was not for that I would be on the mainland with you sweating it up

I view 50 F as the coldest temps for human living! lol

Yes, now I only suffer a few months until the temperatures hit 70+. I had a bout last week when it was 68. I was stressed too - have a high stress job- and I was picking up heavy bales to feed to the horses. The twine caused my fingers to go white and numb.
We keep it cold in our house during the winter-65 at night. My heat blanket is set on a 2 or 3 until the nights are above 70.
