BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

ANgela-- been a loooong time since cattle classes-- monensin and rumensin-- are added as growth enhancers BUT I was  under the impression they are also  a type of antibiotic. NOw I could certainly be wrong, as I haven't read up on it since all those decades ago. . .

I would dig a little deeper before using the meat or eggs

Yes, Arielle, it kills coccidia at 3 different stages of the life cycle, is safe for beef/dairy and chickens but not for horses, and no withdrawal time to slaughter. Since bmvf is already comfortably feeding this to food-producing animals, on his income-producing farm, I felt it was safe to assume he had no philosophical objections to rumensin in his eggs and chickens. Maybe YOU should "dig a little deeper" or at least think a few seconds before you post. This is the "for production" thread, not the "OMG! chemicals from a lab are icky" thread.

I apologize for scoming across that way -- I was certainly trying for just the opposite.  I have NO problems with appropriate chemical use-- as I state above I learne all my stuff at ag school a long time ago and that was ALL that was promoted at the time.  I aplogize-- I was only trying to be though . GOod bye.

Apology accepted except that last bit about trying to be thorough. If you were sincere in your efforts to be thorough, you would have done your own quick-and-dirty google search instead of publicly reprimanding me. I have a bachelor's in biochemistry and will not be bullied into silence by someone who self-reports taking an ag class or two way back when.

Best wishes,
Angela

I can wrap my head around feeding a rooster/cull I don't want to pick clean, but not the maggot thing. That is what you are talking about, right? or is it something similar? There is just something about them that gag me and our winter last year would've killed ANY bugs/maggots, ect in the coops.

I wish I had more space to do worms and crickets. That I could do. Just no room and too cold in the winter. Plus need the meat now. Didn't think, until I called the feed store, that they would not have a single feed with meat protein in it

Maybe I should think about doing some small game hunting again?

I think I will have to settle, for now, on grocery bought meat, for the chicks and cook it really really well.

I am trying the fermented feed, to try to cut my feed losses back. Will see if that becomes too work intensive. Trying to ask questions on that thread. Still waiting on answers.

I'm not sold on the other benefits of fermented feed unless I can see a difference myself in them, but the feed costs are becoming astronomical and most of that is loss, not eaten food.

I am trying it today, and they do love it. I kept the dry food down for all, and none of them are really eating any, only the fermented. Started the year olds today too. Have one more check on them before night sets in, so will know more when I do, as to how much they ate also.

Thank you everyone, for your ideas and responses. I appreciate it very much!

Oh, on that feeder, If I find that this fermented feed is freezing too fast in the winter time here, I will build some, like you mentioned to have on hand. I just can't afford such HUGE feed loss to the mice and wild birds. I was cleaning out the grow out coop, as they will be transferred to the main layer coop/pen soon, and found layers and layers of feed in the bedding, sigh.

Thanks again everyone!!! LOTS of great ideas to think on and things I hadn't thought of. So grateful to have found this thread!!!!

edit

Send me a pm some time ron-- love chatting with ya-- this thread has become a bit too snarky too.
All threads have their 'snarky' moments! I've certainly caused my share of discomfort for others and even myself. We just absorb it and go on...we NEED clear-headed folks like you to help keep us on an even keel. Please reconsider...

My chickens cannot waste feed, I use an automatic feeder and the feed goes into a 6" deep bowl so they cannot scratch it out on the ground. It works, I tried several size bowls and the 6" deep works great. I got them at TSC.

Are talking about the PVC pipe, that feeds into that "bowl" you mentioned? Do you have any pictures of it? Thanks for the idea. I've been wondering how the fermented feed will work in our winters up here and think I should, at the very least, have the materials ready, to make some, in case I can't feed the fermented in the winter, ie it freezes faster than they can eat it?????

Thanks for the info!

I will get a pic tomorrow, it is raining today. And yes it is PVC pipe. Your welcome
