BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

This is certainly relevant to chickens...and just about any other small farm STOCK owners.
I wonder if many of you have been keeping an 'eye' on the various financial stock markets and exchanges? The Dow has reached an all-time high today....

.... Not so fast. I'm a student of history and most people realize that history does repeat itself. I won't go into details but our nation is sitting on an economic boiling cauldron and there is no way that it can long continue at this pace and not boil over.... scalding everyone below and only some of the big-wigs making off with everything that's left. Read up on what sort of situation the country was in just before the activities around the stock markets before the situation got too hot and blew this country into the 'Great Depression' and that pushed us into World War...again.

I'm not the least bit happy with our current bunch of freaks in the White House and Congress but there is plenty of blame to go 'round and plenty far back beyond Bush ...Not the point.

I expect there might be times coming sooner than any of us can realize where having a small plot of garden and a few chickens and meat rabbits in their sheds will be life saving. This kind of stock will have real value should what might happen to our economy, does happen.

I used to play the 'market' but got out in one piece after the scrum in 1987....never to make that mistake again. I have friends who 'kept the faith' and many are living in squalor, compared to their previous highs.

That's it....just pay attention. Try to get rid of debt and do everything you can to stay out of debt.

Some may laugh at this post and what it's words mean but they fail themselves if they don't at least look around and see what's been going on, hell, what is going on!

That is all....................................RON

Very true Ron. People have forgotten how out grandparents lived when the only way you had new things was by paying cash, trade or not having it. I admit I have debt but try to keep it to a minimum. My friends think I am nuts with all I do around the house and by living within my means. If the stock market crashes guess who has a full pantry, chicken and eggs? Not them :)

I fear a rude awakening for even 'country folk'. Those in the cities will make their way out of the cities after the PETA members have eaten their fat dogs and cats...trying to get those of us who 'didn't sing and dance all summer' to provide them with food. Many will be prepared to take it. It's not going to be pretty.

We've been preparing for decades, since we are so close to the major population centers of the Eastern Seaboard.

RON

PS...I have excellent credit...I simply do not use it.

Yep... What else can I say but "Yep"!

We need to really be realistic about what has "value" these days...
Value today is measured in one's ability to be debt free, with a large garden and a variety of protein sources (some with high fat), and the ability to store and preserve, and function at a high level off grid with necessary natural resources. Bout sums it up! ;-)

Or you could become a stainless steel rat. I think that will be a help for this young generation.
People who buy gold are stupid. All they are doing is leaving records of where the actual gold is so the Government can come in and collect it when they nationalize gold. Silver is a much better option. Easier to cut a coin into "bits" and inexpensive enough the government may not bother with it. Plus can be bought a places where the sale isn't registered.
Best,
Karen

Gold has already been nationalized, but I'm far too cunning to buy something like metals.

Lawyers don't pass the Bar toting much real sense in many cases, but with a few years in, we've witnessed just about every type of subterfuge that exists. The smart lawyers quickly cast aside the procedures that are certain to get them disbarred or jailed, but save the ''Special Situations" that can be used to hide assets and keep them in open site...or sight. ( Both are correct, in this case)...

No I will not disclose them...

Animal rennet may be difficult to get in the near future. It really doesn't go bad if stored properly so we decided to order 4 quarts to add to the stock on hand. I'm sorry, but some cheeses will never be as well produced with veg. rennet as with that from the stomachs.

I suppose we could produce our own animal product but the cost is not high so I feel better to buy the commercially available stuff and try to keep plenty available.

Cheese makers know it takes darned little rennet to set rather large vats of curd but it's also good to support the folks who sell these products.

Ok ROn,I'm in. You touched a nerve!

A few years ago, I talked to a now retired uncle about what happened with the most recent banking crash; the conversation left me cold and confirming my worst thoughts. Nothing has effectivly changed despite all the new rules and regs. I have great respect for the man as he spent much of his career helping foreign governments get their banking up to par, including RUssia. (AUnt has a few stories about the KGB . . but being a good Swede, she just laughs it off.) We are not as safe as we think. It is all a shell game.

THis fueled my push to try to increase my own food production. ANd realize a need to protect it.

Sustainable farming is tough work . . . not sure many of us are up to the task. I know there are a few here who are light years ahead of me in skills and ability. I'm learning bit by bit to be independent for food sources, but the learning curve is steep.

WHatever happen to the old VIctory Garden mentality??? Was this all government driven?? IS that why the bush admin and subsequent admins have not pushed this adjenda as it makes us look like we are in desperate straits?? I have long felt that we are living in a house of cards.

Related but not related to the current theme of this thread.....I have a breeding question pertaining to production of meat and eggs.
smile.png

If I'm looking for particular traits, and for the sake of argument lets say meatiness and broody hens are my focus, and hatchery stock actually provides those traits in spades.....what would be the advantage in hunting down standard bred fowl? Even if this theoretical hatchery stock was marginally smaller than standard bred stock, could they not be bred up over a few years? Or perhaps that's the problem....that they do't have the genetic bandwidth for that.

Also, if said standard bred stock seemed to be a caricature of itself and was mostly for exhibition only, what purpose would the SOP serve when breeding up the hatchery birds?
