BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Not only is your point of view 'allowed' it's greatly respected and appreciated.

By the way, I have always had a very strong affinity for the Doms. If I didn't have so many birds and more on the way...

That breed just might take up some room in out new facility. I've read all the info I can get on them on the net and

really wouldn't mind having a few of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RON

Thank you

This is my first time with Dom's. I am finding they are AWESOME. They hold the title of "first American breed". Thought that was really neat but bought them because they go broody, close to as much as a bantam. I want to go that route. Instead of incubators. Not sure it'll work that way, we will see

I just can't do bantam's with the birds I have. They would eat them, most likely and our winters are too harsh for them. They are a little flighty, but not in a bad way. It seems to help them evade predation better than the bigger breeds. They also seem to teach the other birds to pay more attention. Really really like this breed.

I am first and foremost a Barred Plymouth Rock woman. Raised, bred and showed them for 30 years. Lived on a farm, so they HAD to produce. If not, they were culled. I admit, as a kid I DID compromise some of the utility so I could show and win. I learned the hard way that utility is first and foremost and my issues came from inbreeding them for type and feathering mostly. When I was raising my kids, things were different. I was older and wiser and taught the kids that both were important and the kids had to include utility in their breeding programs even though they showed them too. Also, back then, there were more lines to cross with, to bring things back, then there are today. It kills me to see these birds in the condition some are in. They are gorgeous but can hardly get an egg out of them. There are breeders though that are bringing the utility back and I am too.

Sure wish I still had that line!!!!

We must all take our own paths, and we learn from each step if we watch where we put our feet.
Right..cow patties..left...stupid dog piles....right...chicken poop...left....sheep scat...does it never end?
Right, left, right, left, right, left...and so it goes....every step brings a new discovery.

Not at all...never entered my mind! Besides, that is now a dead end. We've decided that after all the fuss (and expense) we really don't want to deal with breeding birds for show. It's just not 'US' and we had our fill of showing with dogs and horses.

Take it easy on yourself!!

Trying to catch up...

Ron, are you still going thru with the SOP NN project. Are you breeding but just not showing. I follow the Heritage thread as well so I have heard you speak of them.

In a word...NO. We decided we had enough showing with the dogs and horses in the past and are re-focusing on production.

Thanks for asking

RON

My Dominique's are a great example of that. They are bred to the SOP and have great utility in both eggs and meat. Do you see their breeders on here? I haven't much. Only on my state page, and not often. My point? One, that birds can be both and that it IS being done with the heritage birds. There are other points but that is the basic premise.
Do you sell hatching eggs?

It sounds like you have very nice Dominique's

So...I ended up with some cochin hatching eggs from a local breeder. Long story...but this was not my breed of choice. Trying to do a little background on the breed and so far my impression is that they are large versions of the silkies...all show with no production. I would like to put pressure on them as a meat bird for any future generations. Any thoughts on how often I should weigh for culling, etc? I'm not looking to produce the next broiler or anything but would like to get some use out of the chicks that are hatching left and right in the bator today.

FYI: I will be leaving out of BWI on 5/16 for parts that has very nice weather now, I think... will have to check but after about one week or 10 days there, I'll be headed into beautiful Autumn weather for .....as long as my son can handle the farm without crying the blues. I'm hoping he doesn't get too despondent while I'm gone and use my special weapon while shooting at varmints.....

In truth, I think he is waiting with baited breath to have rid of me for up to or perhaps more than a month. I suppose I could check in here but likely will not. I do not like internet cafes and I'm honestly not sure if the hotels where I'll be staying have 'loaner' pc's. Jason offered me his 'coming home gift' to use while I'm gone...but I know I would have to yank his arms out of socket and take them along.

I've considered buying a cheapo just for traveling but then, this will be the extent of my traveling for sometime and Jason simply won't need it if I take that trips .....

The ones I looked at are under $500 but still not sure if I even want to deal with anything in the USA while I'm 'on this badly needed vacation...the first in more than 15...perhaps 18 years..I just haven't really paid that much attention.

Jason just informed me that computers can be bought in other countries, South of the border(s). Might get a 'hot' one so I can spend time in a very hot sweaty prison...No....that will never happen...

@3riverschick: Jason will contact you sometime mid June to check on the details of YOUR road trip. You'll like him... He's a swell guy and will take good care of you.
