BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I consider Jeff a good friend.

Jeff is a very nice guy. He had eggs available at the time I hadn't gotten my incubator yet. He has a friend that works in Shreveport and could meet me. Now that I have the incubator Jeff has his chickens running out. Maybe in the fall he said. He doesn't come on a lot but when he does, people listen because he so smart.

For those who might be interested, RON will be back in the USA, 8/5/14 but will not be at his farm until around one week later.

I mentioned to him that I have been looking at 'Rudy,' on the Naked-Neck thread, so he's decided to bring me a few young turken pullets when he and Jason come for his birthday bash in KY.

NNs...That's all I need! If I can't deal with them, I hope Mr. Jimmy has room.

Actually I do like turkens, especially dads. They are really BIG and very productive but I'm just not sure I need or want any right now. I'll see if Jason can talk him out of it. If they want to bring me more chickens, I hope they get into their freezers and whip out more capons and/poulardes!

Gotta' go to work so am closing out.

That is all.

Send hellos from all of us. I know he had a good time.

I put a dozen eggs in the incubator today. These are out of my daughters RIR's and the male sex links. I just want to hatch some to get some experience. I'm keeping only the large eggs as the rainbow layers are starting to lay Ping-Pong sized eggs.

My NH's are ready to sort. I'm just waiting on some PVC fittings I ordered online to make a PVC A-frame chicken tractor. I ordered enough fittings to make 3 tractors. I'm using 1 inch PVC and hope the triangular shape will give it enough strength. I'll cover part of the tractor with a tarp and may try to rig up nest boxes on the one end for the females.

Well, I'm pretty bummed out right now. Three days ago the power was knocked out by lightening and it was off 14 hrs. We're in a all electric house so no water from the well, no toilet, no A/C, no TV or internet and NO power for my incubator. It was off for 14 hrs at 75 degrees. Too long. Today is day 21 and Nada. Of course, I wasn't expecting any but people on the forum said wait it out. sigh. Fifteen good White Plymouth Rocks. I'll have to re order.

I did read something on another thread Incubator annon. thread, that for best results to soak you eggs in 3 Vit C capsules in water for 2 min and then let dry before putting in the incubator. Then on day 16, turn it off or down for 6 hrs to 75 degrees. Rate of hatch is up a lot and mortality is down. I'll try to get the article. Very interesting.
