BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Could be worse....She could be a power tool addict with the belief that, "I know I can build that better and cheaper once I buy some more power tools" kinda gal.

(Yes, I really DO need three drills and two compound miter saws....)

Right now it's closing in on 110 ºF here and I'm trying to ignore my heat-induced headache so I can keep working on building the new pens for my chickens, which are currently sitting in front of their new evaporative cooler, panting heavily, while I work in the sun. Those dog crates are seeming like a pretty smart idea to me right now.

Good way of looking at it....even if it's still a certain kind of logic!

In case anyone is interested RE: the Avian flu: http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDAAPHIS/bulletins/109d739#.VX84tMKdBxI.facebook

If it's airborne now....I hope our birds manage to build resistance and immunity.
Will be hard to see the resistance if the state swoops in and culls the whole flock if a few birds get sick . . . . perhaps sense will prevail before too many flocks are destroyed.

Has any one read of recommendations for the home flocks, as in burn the bodies and disinfect? I'm betting more than one flock will fly under the radar of the state officials.

I am skeptical that resistance is truly an option here. Flu viruses change so fast. What is here today is not the same as tomorrow's sub strain. Perhaps one can offer some protection against another if it is related closely enough. Then do we really want to perpetuate carriers when there is risk of jumping species? It will happen eventually.

I do not know the answers. It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

OMG. I panic at the thought that my kids would do such a thing . . On the other hand I just picke d up 3 med dog crates at yard sales: 2 at $7 each and a third at $10. Yup, good size to throw a rooster in!! Or to be roaster. . .

In truth, she comes by it honestly...Jason and I built two brooders a while back, (2'X4'X12') and used 3/4 inch, high grade plywood for the whole job. Why you might ask? Are my chickens super strong...NO. We just happened to have a goodly stack of it around and nothing thinner (less expensive) to use. We were both too lazy to make the 16 mile, round trip to get something more appropriate.

I have to get a new card for the camera tomorrow and I will take pics of the chicks...they are really growing! One thing for certain...the brooders will not fall apart anytime soon. We also used my old X-Pens to cover the 2' tall brooders.

Gotta' go clean the rascals today. It shouldn't be my job to clean after chicks that belong to others.
