Hello all! I just wanted to join this thread so I can follow along. I am getting my first flock of purebred BBS Ameraucana chicks in the mail soon. I have had a random assortment of chickens for the last couple years and just decided I would like to breed some.
I'm getting these chicks from a well known Ameraucana breeder so the quality should be good, but I want to learn as much about breeding for different characteristics as possible so I can keep them good. I'm not as concerned about looks as I am egg laying. Meat production would be a plus but I don't see these as too much of a meat bird.
I have a lot of questions but I'm reading back through this thread so I can try to minimize asking too much that has already been said...
Welcome!
You'll find a lot of good info in this thread and the people here are fantastic...always ready to offer input.
I've had some cull cockerels (4-6 months) and they were surprisingly meaty on the leg quarters. You'll want to breed for nice broad egg-bearing hips on your Ams anyway.Meat production would be a plus but I don't see these as too much of a meat bird.

I get mine from Luanne, just north of Gainesville. She is "cpartist" here on BYC, and has wheaten, blue wheaten, and now lavender Ams. Her wheaten line goes broody. Last summer she gave me a bunch of her cull cockerels for caponizing practice, and I did get a full capon Am who makes a good chick nanny.Good to know! I haven't raised any true Ameraucanas yet (was sold EEs before I knew any better) and I haven't seen anyone say much about them being a good meat bird.
I see your here in Florida! I'm living in the panhandle right now...Where did you get your Ams, if you don't mind me asking? I am getting mine shipped from texas but would love to find somewhere closer to get them in the future...
