BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I have Buff Cornish, that will lay those kind of eggs, the Dark Cornish always lay a roundish egg. I got those Buffs from a breeder but I suspect they are mixed with something else, Cornish tend to lay roundish eggs, there are times you can't tell big end from little.

My dark cornish lay very round eggs too, sometimes with a point on one end. I wonder what white cornish eggs are like?

All my Cornish eggs are easily distinguishable...with distinct large and pointy ends...likely because they are hatchery birds.

EDIT: One thing to be said for my hatchery Dark Cornish...as pullets, they are laying some very respectably sized eggs.

FYI...Ariel and Jason have decided to order 14 Black Ameraucanas from Cackle Hatchery. I never saw this one coming.

Not looking for an argument or even a discussion (I'll be gone no later than Saturday the 9th) but I have always been put off by chickens with muffs and even colored eggs. We no longer sell eggs to the public and see no point in getting them, especially for something like $11 bucks each and straight run...They likely suspected my reaction and paid for them on their own.

Wow! That is quite a surprise. I admit that I really like my muffed Easter Eggers, but that's because I'm a sucker for any sweet chicken and some pretty eggs and all of my girls lay blue and aqua green eggs. Did they give any indication of their goal(s) with the Ameraucanas?

They told me frankly and without a blink, they want to cover the Black Ameraucanas with the best (MINE, in my opinion) White Chantecler cock that we have. I don't think they give a flip about what color that the Ameraucanas lay...but what do I know? I'm too near to getting outa' here to get upset...I'm sure I'll get an ear full (sales pitch) on the ride to the airport. Jason is driving us to Pittsburgh.

One of my dark cornish is doing the same- a very nice, large, dark egg. 3 finger widths between pubic bones, and 5 fingers capacity :) sounds like a good layer to me.
Hellbender I'm with you on the Ameraucanas- not my cuppa tea either. I'm not fond of eggs other than white or brown.
But Jason and Ariel are on to something, those blue egg layers are hot hot hot and it's very likely a good business decision! Maybe you'll warm up to them later.

The muffs? They sure look warm in winter Lol! Colored eggs? I only have EE, two with muffs two without, one lays like crazy, dark olive green. When my dad saw a carton full of them he said 'they look rotten' and he looked serious Lol! They all look and taste the same in the frying pan...

EE welsummer crosses broody hatched out Aug 6, so 21 weeks? -4degrees at night, middle of winter no supplemental light. Laying brown eggs...I was hoping for even darker olive...Brother will be gone soon, big enough.

About 30 miles from Porto Alegre, Brasil.

My property in Brasil is relatively near two fresh water rivers and fish/seafood is a major component in the restaurant fare around Porto Alegra but even the most renown place for seafood/fresh water fishes will have BEEF as a major part of their menu.

I kinda' miss the beef cattle we sold out a while back. Who knows, perhaps when we get back, I might consider a smaller breed that does well on grass feed without much or any grain.

What do you folks think of Scottish Highland cattle?
