BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I finally got to the end of this thread! I've been reading it for quite a while now! I don't currently have any birds, but I've been reading this site top to bottom for probably around a year getting ready for when I get some birds... But... would I be welcome to talk about Quail? that's what I am planning on getting first, and probably some Muscovys to keep the bugs down. I work at a company that is owned by another company in Japan and there are a lot of homesick Japanese I could sell Quail eggs to on a regular basis, plus, they don't take up as much room as chickens and can be stacked...

I also wanted to comment about the goat... I have a really funny memory of going to dinner at a house owned by people that had goats, they bottle raised the kids and as a little kid, I wanted to go down and see the baby goats... well, mom took me down there and apparently she is quite the attractive female goat herself... their billy was chasing me away from her, mounting her, and even peed on here to show his undying love! Yeah, all before dinner... So, my mom ended up wearing a bathrobe to dinner after she showered and while her clothes were in the washing machine!

I hope she washed her clothes twice!

This is not a snobby thread....discuss whatever you like!!!

My property in Brasil is relatively near two fresh water rivers and fish/seafood is a major component in the restaurant fare around Porto Alegra but even the most renown place for seafood/fresh water fishes will have BEEF as a major part of their menu.

I kinda' miss the beef cattle we sold out a while back. Who knows, perhaps when we get back, I might consider a smaller breed that does well on grass feed without much or any grain.

What do you folks think of Scottish Highland cattle?
If you are going to Brazil you need to check out the Indu Cattle and Gyr Cattle. They have cute ears!

This little guy was imported to a farm down in Florida (out of Mexico) then he was exported to Thailand.

This is just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth. I really like it when people can relate their comment to "Breeding for Production". Of course we all go off on the occasional tangent and that's good. As far as quail and ducks go I can see plenty of common ground and would like to know how you are focussing on production with those birds. For example, I can't imagine how anyone could process any quantity of ducks. They are so hard to pluck. I'd love to know how to process them more efficiently. I'd also love to know how your Muscovy's help with bug control. As far as I'm concerned insect control directly relates to all sorts of on-farm production. I got some Muscovies once because I heard they ate tons of flies. Well my pigs ate tons of Muscovies and now I have none.

Welcome and I'm glad you joined us! As @hellbender said, no snobs here so talk away. I know of a couple people here in AZ who love their quail eggs and even sell them to some of the Asian markets. If you can find that niche, go for it!

I briefly looked into quail, I was most interested in the jumbo quail (I think from Texas A&M). There are special quail egg cartons available too. I did not do an economic analysis but I would not be surprised if quail were more profitible for eggs and meat than chickens are.

You guys are SOOOOOO EVIL!!!! I am now thinking about getting quail for the eggs.

CHICKEN MATH, GET THEE BEHIND ME!!!!!!!

I don't think they have naked neck quail, so you ought to be safe since they're just not ugly enough for your tastes!

The Silkie-bators are in fine form ... one of the little Silkie eggs I let the first pullet set has pipped already, and when I was checking for unmarked eggs, I picked it up and the chick inside began peeping, which tends to make the hens all the more dragon-like. I guess every clutch has that "early bird" who tries to hatch on day 19.

Just from best estimates I can find, with feed and everything, it shouldn't cost more than 50 cents a dozen to produce the eggs and I should be able to sell for at least $2 a dozen.
