BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I am already in one well two of them

I would stick to those threads. Keep reading this thread but this thread is for breeding for meat and egg production. It takes guts to be able to put down a chick that cant eat from severe cross beak to putting down an old hen who has been with u from the start. Not trying to be mean just saying it how it is. Good luck with your journey and if u can afford to keep a whole bunch of roos for pets do so. Just not everyone can afford that.

Now at (lets just go with over 40) I have been able to reeducate myself as to what food is and what the real cost of having food is. And yes My mind has opened up significantly and my priorities have changed. I am not content to be a consumer as my parents were. I am working hard t'word being a producer, even if it is only for me and mine. I still have a "comfort zone" when it comes to food and I am stretching it slowly. But...

Same here. I've been reading a lot on how much waste is involved for all food products, meat and veg. A lot of wasted resources, a lot of wasted food. Instead of just having some chickens for some eggs and occasionally have to eat some I'm moving towards them actually being a constant source of meat. Same with our garden, always had somewhat of one, now I'm moving towards hopefully not having to buy anything from a store. Just tilled up 60'x75', plus a area by our pond for winter squash and pumpkins, and a area behind our garage to try mangles for the chickens.
Hard work but easy isn't healthy. I might not be able to get away from certain processed foods that we like, but I'm going to try dang hard in putting a dent on what we do buy in a store.

Well I am not old enough to drive yet I pay for there own feed I buildt there coop and I will put down a animal but not if its just old and done laying I will only do that if it's suffering but those threads just don't go very far and I am pretty much talking to myself so I just buz around other threads that I am subscribed to I am not meaning to bring the thread to a hult when I give my opinion it just that everyone asks a bunch of questions and that's where it leads to

I am going to try Mangle beets this year too. We r trying to start most of our plants so we know there are no pesticides. Did u know some green houses spray a chemical on tomatoes and other plants that kills bees so they dont cross pollinate with other plants?

I take no joy in processing my chickens. I take even less joy in spending the $$ feeding them though. I have bills to pay, kids to raise (little money pits, and I can't eat them). I can't afford to have 'pet' chickens, 'kids need new shoes'...
I'd rather process my own chickens then eat the ones from a store raised in filth, processed in gross ways, 'mechanically separated chicken' yumm...

I would to I just can't do it I think of them as pets I don't even eat eggs I have even seen videos were they glue meat together node its ground up to make porkloins and stuff like that I don't think I will ever be able to stop eating meat those pepercorn porkloins are so good those arnt the ones I was talking about I think that has been banned plus it says to be able to tell is if it's glued it will easliy pull apart in hunks

I cant drive yet either. My parents help with feed costs but other than that I buy all the birds and starter. Most of my family wants me to be a farmer or vet. I want to be both!! It takes help to be able to get there though. Try and get yoyr family interested in your hobby and show them your knowledge of your hobby. Mine didnt show much interest till they saw I had a passion for this. I found the easiest way to get them interested is to show them there is benefits. The thing that got may moms family interested is through the meat. They had never tasted anything like the turkey I raised for Thanksgiving. And after that they bragged that turkey up to where I was getting asked if I would raise and butcher Thanksgiving turkeys for people and they would buy them when they were ready. Even breeding and hatching impresses them. Thats how it started for me and my hobby is now starting to make money! Good luck and with a little more work u can accomplish many things!

I want to be a vet but I heard that it is very hard my neighbors grand daughter just started and she said that hardly any get in but I don't want to do all of that school just to not get the job or ability to become a vet the. U have to go to school for something else but u could always be a veterinarian assistant

holm25, it's great to hear that you are making money with your hobby! I've had a few points where I've broken even but I lose money so consistently, I stopped making any real efforts to do much more than pay the bills when they come in and not even bother trying to stay in the 'black'.

I likely should sign all checks with red ink.

I am making most money selling chicks. I made $20.00 on my first order of 8. I have a $60.00 dollar order and another $20.00 dollar order and a few smaller ones. The ducks are the ones making the real money.

Yep! I am with you.Red pen all the way. The boss told me that it is cheaper to buy chicks for $6 each rather than hatching them out with the electricity and all.. I would agree since I would have better luck trying to hatch out a pot of gold than hatch out chicks. I am currently hatching out welsummer chicks and my ratio has been 3 hatched out of 15 that went into lockdown. I just might go to the feed store and add 10 more chicks to make my hatch look better.. LOL
