BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Oh good grief - you're going to get me to get these...

I wonder what their disposition is like...

You know, it might actually be worth it to do a road trip to be able to get only 25...

Your fault for bringing them up in other thread hehe

that is a good point. about their dispositions.. the (slogro)CX I raised over the winter were very nice birds, extremely low aggression.. the cockerels didn;t peck at the lone pullet even at feeding time.

The crosses out of CX and NN are similarly low in aggression, so far. A 3 weeks younger chick from adjoining pen accidentally got in and they did not descend on it like most normal chicks are prone to. Interestingly, the cockerels are very calm, however the pullets are slightly more active/excitable and less "tame". Still overall pretty calm though.

The freedom and black rangers were extremely tame as youngsters to the point of annoyance.. made it impossible to do ANYTHING in their pen... once the cockerels started maturing, some of them became intolerant of any other roosters and had to be separated. They remained otherwise mellow and not flighty at all. The one rooster with some freedom blood is a nice rooster but he does get a little excitable sometimes and does like to challenge the rooster in the next pen.

So with that I'm hoping the broiler NN would be similar, due to broiler type breeding...?

are you really within driving distance to SG? we talked about meeting in AZ.. that was very tempting but was afraid to make a big promise like that. I suppose the next best thing is to find local person to split the order with, but I don't know anyone personally who might be interested.

Curse you, @Kev ...

I just emailed S and G Poultry about when they would next have Naked Necks available. Now I just need to find either folks to share, or a way to somehow raise 100 chicks. I've already got some ideas.

I thought about it, and did the math. I'm a 13 hour drive from S & G - it's a little far to go. Maybe I'll just get 100 shipped to me and try to get someone here to share - and if not, do my best and cull a number of them early for manageability. I'd certainly need to buy a whole new freezer for all that meat...

I don't have a leg hook, but I do have a large fishing net with a rubberized net part (so the least difficult on them). Universally the net or anything I carry in my hands freaks them out way more than walking up on them and trying to catch by hand. I try to get them to a place where I can get my hands over their back - if they move away quickly, I can usually grab a foot, and then get my hands around them. I've given up on the net and am not buying a hook. I'll just keep catching by hand...

That's ours too - nets in our hands and they freak out when we aren't even close to them. I've got a minnow net on an extendable paint pole that I use to gather eggs in weird places, so I don't have to get on my hands and knees - you'd think I was killing chickens with all the screaming going on when I stick the egg net into their pens. Sheesh. That's what I like about our turkeys - they are more laid back than the chickens and guineas and don't scream bloody murder at stuff like that. In fact, I use poles to herd the turkeys into their houses at dusk and they don't have a problem with me following them around with the poles.

Yeah shipping would be good- they should arrive real fast and in good condition I think?

Part of my hesitation on ordering from them is no information on weights, ages, etc.. I know they are faster and bigger than typical hatchery stock NN but that's it.

Quote: I may just give it a shot and see how it goes. At the very worst, it'll be like raising a big batch of meat chickens. And with those numbers, if any of them come with mixed phenotype (Nn), I can cull for that, wanting a flock of NN genotype to work with ideally.

And yeah, I'll see if I can get someone to share. I am betting I'll need to get on the waiting list anyhow - they are out of stock and sell out fast. So I should have some time...

(I have several good tractors, and I'm already planning brooder space in my head...

Yup. I'm crazy.

When I was thinking of ordering them I was going to put a ad on Craig's List and in our local pennysaver for pre-orders first and see if I had any bites. I don't know what they charge for shipping but at $2 a chick plus shipping divided by a 100 I can't imagine I wouldn't have got some takers, unless people are really put off by them...
I was going to pick out just the clean necked ones first of course :-D

Chicken catcher, first time I ever heard someone say they ordered one I had no clue what it was so I looked it up, this vid popped up Lol! Pretty funny in the beginning, but man could he sing! I looked him up he actually won that season.

Thanks everyone, I will stick to the "grab them at night" plan. I've found that in the daytime the first one I can catch by hand, the second I can catch with a net, the third one, fergeddabahdit.

And ha ha haaa! It's funny how everyone talked everyone else into getting naked necks! Pretty soon we'll have to merge the two threads.
