BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Thanks for the clarification! In dogs, we called "top poppers" dogs that "fill the eye" their symmetry and grace are such you just want to keep looking at them. There is no disruption of their breed type or fluid grace which interrupts the eye as one views the dog.
Yes, I am excited about the female family inbreeding. That's what's so neat about having breed with only one color which breeds consistently. Easier to spend more time breeding for type. I am going to explore the possibility of moving my flock to pure silver. As I understand it now, the White Chantecler is a mixture of Silver, dominant and recessive white genes.
A pure silver bird is so much easier to breed for type, smile. I think I can pull some nice structural traits forward out of the females.
Best,
Karen

I wonder if you breed out the dominant and recessive white, if you will start to see colour start to leak through.

If I am right, it should be just the opposite. Silver is a stay white gene. Shouldn't be brassy or color with wind, sun, or weather. Have been conversing with KazJaps about it and KazJaps gave me some ides on how to proceed. I have time tho, my birds wn't get here till middle of next year some time.

I'll be following this with interest! I have no idea how you would actually breed to isolate the silver- an interesting breeding project.

From conversing with KazJaps, it seems that dominant or recessive white will maybe let a darkening of the chick down bleed thru. I noticed this in my silver wheaten Light Sussex when I didn't balance the black correctly in the hackle, tho the bleed thru was from the imbalance of black, not either of the white genes. So I think one tactic would be to cull for the very lightest pure yellow chick. I think ( based on research and experience) that the places to look for an aspect of darker down would be the nape of he neck and where the dark chipmunk stripes would have been on the back if the bird had been e+ allele based( which of course it would not be.

Ok now I have to ask........ I am curious why you do not like single combs. For me the issue is frostbite, that is why I want to breed that trait out of my chicken flock.

In truth, it's more aesthetics than anything else.  If Barred Rocks had cushion combs, I'd likely have a yard full of 'em!!!     :gig

The chick in my avatar is a Columbian Wyandotte.

Hi,
Back with more nutrigenomics stuff.
I just love the Hamlet Protein website. They have such neat, groundbreaking articles and presentations. We have discussed Prof. Uni from Hebrew University in Israel before. Above is a link to Hamlets new "Feed Your Brain" part of their website It includes links to all kinds of subject articles and presentations on calves, piglets and poultry. Hamlet specializes in nutrition of the embryo and very young animal. Ok, in the link above scroll down to the presentation by Prof. Uni ( a global leader in the field) in "Feeding The Newly Hatched Chicks " . Turn the sound up. She clearly explains everything I am researching and the "whys" behind it.
There are several other good articles on broilers there which it wouldn't be a waste of time to read.
Ok, I just watched "Early Nutrition For Broiler Chickens" by Prof. Iji. It's about 14 minutes and well worth the tiem to view. It's a good'un. Lots of good diagrams on his screen.
Just finished watching this Hamlet presentation from Jan. 2016. " The Importance of early Nutrition on Broiler Growth" It's about 11 minutes long. Very interesting. Also covers foot pad lesions. Another part of the explaination of the science behind why my chicks grew so robust and healthy when I fed the Bovidr Labs Poultry Nutri-Drench in their water for the 1st 2 weeks of life. The trick is, not only is it top quality, the Drench doesn't need to be digested so the helps were mainlining directly to the chick's bloodstream to supplement its nutrition without having to engage the rapidly developing G.I. tract....while at the same time rapidly replacing the low nutrient levels the chick had at hatch. Letting it keep the nutritional reserves in the yolk sac for nutrition and development instead of having to use them for energy. This means the chick keeps on track to realize its genetic potential at slaughter.
Ok, this topic is at the heart of my research and passion. Being 52 mintes long, I will watch it later tonight.
" Gut Health in Broiler Chickens: Intestinal Innate Immunity and Performance" by Prof. Neiwold of Belgium, whose country is one of the hotbeds for this kind of research..

Glad to see that researchers take gut microflora seriously. I think the naturopaths have been right all along- health begins and ends with the symbiotic flora. (That's an exaggeration of course, but I think it's important).
I still wonder what the effect of glyphosate residue is on the gut microflora, I try to limit that stuff. I'm not at all pleased that glyphosate is used as a dry- down for wheat- it's becoming more and more difficult to avoid that stuff. I don't have any problem with GMO crops per se, it's the glyphosate residue I'm trying to avoid. Now what?

Ok, took a trip around the Net. Seems like this residue is scary stuff. Also seems like a lot of folk scaring us with it want to sell us newsletter or something. I wonder if probiotics will solve the challenge the residue presents or if something more is needed.

An update on the chick w/ compound fx wing.
The week this happened I was swamped at work and not feeling well, so had decided not to do anything to repair it, just wait until the little one got ill and cull. But it never got sick, it has continued to thrive. The long intact bone has disappeared the short jagged one is still there, no infection or problems. Here are some pics from a few minutes ago.
