BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Yeah, a little after I posted these pictures, he got loose in the shed and went after my house-hen (my Serama from my high school days...). She is fine but long story short, I drove him down to the live poultry processor ten minutes from us, had him process him for $3 and he'll be dinner tonight. I reached my limit with him.

You have a poultry processor near year? $3.00???? I am sooooo jealous.

That is good to know it can be done about the male CX, just making plan "B's" in my head.
I think duluthralphie kept some cx roos. I know he said his some cx hens lived to about 11 months.... he is doing a ranger/cx too
others have had issues w/the cx roos breast getting in the way of mating
I have a cx hen from good friday, she was laying a egg every 3 days, she quit laying a week ago.,,I had a BR hen hatch out 4/7 mixed roo/cx eggs .. 3 weeks ago.. they are bigger than the 2 mix roo/BR chicks she hatched out

Been a while since I post heh ^^; atm we had to sell off 10+ roosters to a person we know that wanted lawn ordaments for their workshop. The main focus for meat is silkies to sell which leads me yo ask; as anyone order purely poultry " broiler silkies"? We are thinking about it but curious if anyone else has.

Wow! I didn't know they were actually selling Silkie broiler chicks. Do they taste different?

Good info to know. I figured if a cx roo could be kept until maturity it would likely be an AI situation to get the mating done. I'm really hoping I don't have to go that road, that my two cross gals will lay soon and I'll get some chicks.

I have never eaten these specific birds, but in general FM meat tastes slightly sweeter. It is a very subtle difference and if you highly season the meat you'll miss it entirely. Most people have a big problem getting over the look though.

There was someone on our NY thread who 'adopted' a cx cockerel. I told her it would probably have a heart attack and die. It did live, I don't know for how long she hasn't been on in awhile.

It's as though my Wheaten pullet literally waited for him to be gone before exhibiting before of egg laying, Comb/Waddles finally have come in over the past few days but they weren't full and red at ALL. Just looked at the back deck/patio, and there she was squawking away. I walked out there and escorted her out of the garden, and instead of gallavanting away, she would just squat in place. I swear, she cracks me up.

However, this is just my luck. I *would* get rid of my only wheaten cockerel days before she (possibly) hits point of lay. Oh well. I'll order more wheatens in the spring and hand-raise a boy that isn't a complete box of expletives.

I wonder where TSC gets their chicks. The silkies I got from there a couple yrs ago grew quick and were the fastest I've ever had to lay, and laid great that first yr. The rooster was over 5lbs.
