I personally have never ordered from Porters butI have heard some not so good things from people... But idk... Stuff happens sometimes and its not always the sellers fault.

I got mine from a breeder who breeds mutt tukeys. But you cant really breed mutts cuz two different colors make an already known color! Like a Royal Palm and Bourbon Red a make a Bronze if I remember right!

Okay....so I'm already making plans on where to keep my new turkeys....and figuring out how to convince the hubby that this really is a good idea.

On another note, today was weights and photo day and WHOA! My big boy chick, now named Andres the Giant, is just blowing away every other chick I've ever hatched except the CXs. Here he is in his full glory:

Andres - 6.98 ounces @ 2 weeks (502% increase since hatch!!!)

He's also turning out to be a really sweet, affectionate chick, and yes, he has five toes. I'm thinking of hatching another egg or two from his mother to see if I get the same results.

The other two chicks I hatched from my flock also appear to be cockerels, so far.

NN chick: 6.53 ounces @ 2 weeks, also pretty darn big!

And my EE mix. @Kev I know you said this should be a sex-linked chick and female because of being all black, but it sure is behaving like a cockerel. Sorry about the blurry photos. My phone camera simply can't focus on his black feathers.
6.46 ounces @ 2 weeks

And, here's a photo of one of my favorite Silver Grey Dorking pullets, just because I managed to get the photo downloaded to my computer already:
4.66 ounces @ 2 weeks:

Despurred my first rooster (Dumbledore, my oldest) this evening (used the plier method, which takes the hard part off and leaves the quick). Not supposed to bleed much. Yeah, right.

It was easy and straightforward, but I had a cuddle session with Dumbledore while waiting for his soft "quick" spurs to stop oozing enough for him to go to roost. I have styptic powder, but I've misplaced it. :he  Used flour, and just ordered more styptic...

He's a good boy - he was hero to the flock protecting them all from a pack of terriers who came into the yard (almost dying in the process), and will always have Hero status for that. I don't handle him much at all, but we had a nice chat and cuddle tonight, once I caught him. :D

Speaking of which...

I have some chickens whose nails and beaks look great without any trimming, and others who have nails that are too long and must be clipped (not too bad in beaks). Same coop, same conditions. Any thoughts? Thanks to @Turk Raphael
, I started paying attention to the nails (glad I did!!!). For instance, under the identical conditions, the Cream Legbars get long nails while the other breed chickens do not...

Bob Blosl said something in his thread about how you could tell who foraged the most based on how worn down their nails are. I'be found it be pretty spot with a few exceptions (frequent broodies and feather shanked).

I'd certainly believe it based on the condition of the paddocks and how frequently they need to be rotated for some of the groups!!!!

(To clarify - the Naked Necks have the shortest nails... and I have to rotate them the most frequently. I think the Cream Legbars might be longer in part because they had a harder time of it with dry fowl pox than the other chicken in their area...)
