BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Well I got a pullet egg in the naked's pen yesterday!  Guess I need to watch some chicken porn again refresh my memory on how to AI.  Stripey Butt doesn't like to be handled so this is either going to make him like me better or set him over the edge!!!!! lol lol lol

I am confused about something, the egg was light brown, I thought the cx would lay white????

CX lay brown eggs. The original parent stock are both brown egg breeds.

Thanks guys for clarification on the egg color, just didn't want to set the wrong eggs, Gary was pretty sure it was hers, she was sitting there and acting like she was laying.

Today we harvested and filleted three more Tilapia from out aquaponics setup. Here's the largest one we've raised to date:

He measured 17-18" in length:

And over 5" in height. The thickest part of the filet was over 1.5" thick. He was almost 1 year old.

I know, it's not chicken...but it is "breeding for production".

Do you have breeders?

Do you have breeders?

They're all mixed in a tank together, unsexed. We just let nature take its course. We started with 15 and wound up with about 45 after separating some of their fry for a while and then reintroducing them. These were three of the largest in the tank. One turned out to have eggs inside of her.

x2 regarding living vicariously!

We have a spring-fed pond here,we've stocked it in the past with bass, bluegill and cat-fish, but honestly, we haven't fished it in a LONG time, right before this last hurricane, we noticed some strange film at the top of our water, and haven't wanted to fish or eat anything from our pond since. We're actually heading to the extension office tomorrow for a water testing kit from them. I'm going to be mighty fired up if somehow Florida fish and game managed to not report yet another case of water contamination.

This is precisely why I like our closed system. I know what our water quality is and test the water quarterly, and I control what our fish eat. Yes...I'm a control freak.

As far as the aquaponics is concerned, I'm still a whole lot better at growing the protein than the plants. I had a gorgeous bed full of bell pepper plants that suddenly and inexplicably began dying off. Now I'm down to about 8 plants that are all struggling to make a comeback and produce tiny baby bells, but nothing substantial. I don't know why they died...I don't know why they stopped dying and began fruiting again. My Swiss Chard has improved dramatically over the past month, but none of the other seeds I "planted" have done a darn thing. My husband's so frustrated with the plants that he keeps threatening to throw in the towel, but after today's catch he's reconsidering again. I just need to paint my darn thumb a little greener.

Male and female Tilapia are determined by viewing the genital papilla.
The Tilapia on the left is a male and on the right is a female Tilapia.
The male papilla looks like a Pyramid, The female is more open and wide to let large eggs through.
Now you can sex them...

Yet more awesome info!!!

DesertChic, I 100% feel you on that. I'm almost reluctant to put waterfowl on our property until we get it looked at and fixed, but I know goslings sell incredibly quick. We'll see, it makes me want to invest in a closed system.
