BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Processed Hugo the huge this evening. Just not the cockerel I aspire to add to my breeding program. At a little over 8 weeks of age, Hugo was at 6 pounds 2.1 oz. live weight - Just Big and sloppy.

Looking at the Carcass quality, generally not superior at 4 pounds 1.2 oz. I believe I made the right decision.

A nice freezer bird, but poor genetics.

@DesertChic don't feel bad I've got a pretty green thumb, but for some reason haven't had good success with any peppers hot or sweet. I get some sometimes, but so few usually I should just give up.

Ordered a few things I've wanted to try early, have to order multiplier potato onions in the fall anyway so added a couple other things to make sure I try them. Jung's seeds was the only place that had the onions left besides a place in Canada on ebay. Jung's also have mammoth red mangels that I want to grow for the chickens and sweet meat squash which is a old heirloom that grows big and stores a long time.

Last time I was looking for onions and garlic late, Territorial had some. The mangels sound great. I've thought of trying them out but hadn't gotten around to ordering any. Part of the problem is that I need to plant things at a different time than most companies ship. Most companies are up north and their growing season is much later and here in TX, if I don't start growing in winter, by the time *spring* gets here, it's too hot and the temps are stressing the plants so much that they don't produce well. I've had some companies refuse to send me garlic in November, telling me that it should wait until spring and I'm like nope, this is Texas, I plant them in winter for best results.

Territorial has some awesome stuff. They also had the multiplier onions but were sold out. Only other place that had them was I think southern exposure seed exchange, they only had yellow left and were sold out of red and white. A place on ebay in Canada has all three colors in greater quantities a lot cheaper but evened out with the xtra cost of shipping. I went with Jung's who only have yellow and got the smaller package. Figured I better try them first and see how they do anyway. Same with the mangels, wanted a half lb, went with one package, see how I grow them first. Those multiplier onions if they grow good I'll have more than we need in a few yrs anyway. Like to try those Egyptian walking onions some day also.
That's funny on the garlic. We can only grow hard neck successfully and it must be planted in late fall. I've heard conflicting info on these onions, most say fall planting, also saw spring in extreme cold...??
So I planted half and will plant other half in spring.
Someday I'd like to try the real wasabi plants Territorial has (only place I've ever saw them), expensive though. Best planted in old creek beds, and we have plenty of old spring run beds on the hill behind us.

Well then, you just need to get your garlic from here in AZ.

This is where I bought all of my bulbs from. I got an assortment of types so I can compare heat and flavor.

At risk of giving away my hometown, we drive by Territorial pretty much everyday. There retail store is on the road out of town that we take to get home. It's a great store with great plants in a sizeable variety.

Be interesting to see how the garlic turns out. Sometimes I think they are wrong when they recommend certain planting dates.

Quote: Eeep! No freezes yet here (late - we usually have our first at Thanksgiving) - but we're supposed to get one later this week. Gotta get that frost cloth out for the lettuce...

I just got a notice of 50% off garlic and shallots on December 3 - Peaceful Vally Farm and Garden Supply. (www.groworganic.com). You could try in case there are any left...
