BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I chased a few birds out early this AM so they would find their cracked corn. They were out for about 1 minute tops lol. The pick of the line is of a Buckeye who was following me around for awhile lol

Still warmish here, just below the freezing mark. Chickens are still running around outside, but the temperature will plummet next week. We'll see how they like that! Probably not much.
I picked up a couple of 5.5L heated water bowls from TSC on sale for 25 bucks CDN. I wonder if they will keep the water liquid.

Okay, I've been doing some research on artificial insemination of chickens, trying to help my naked boy to become a daddy w/ some very large gals. Now as I have continued my search I came across a site that started "Frequently asked questions" ............. now I don't like to call anyone a liar, but really I have a hard time believing how often you can collect rooster semen is a "frequently asked question"!!! I never did get an answer, so any of you experienced AI'ers, how often can / should I harvest?

I would collect every few days.

If the roo has been successfully breeding other hens, I would recommend having only the large hens with him if this set up is possible. He may be able to breed them. The smallest naked was sort of bantam sized, he (very) successfully bred all hens from bantam to freedom ranger cross hens(big hens, maybe 9 pounders- they towered over him...). I do understand wanting to be sure and there being special circumstances like maybe the clothing interfering etc..

I've done AI before, three times a week seemed to be good enough. By the way.. despite the videos showing a hen turned face down for AI deposit.. that's not necessary and I dare say not a good idea to do with the meaties.... usually just grabbing the hen on the ground, often that was enough for her to expose her vaginal opening through the cloaca, if she doesnt, sort of pinch the sides by the tail should do the trick. Just deposit or squirt the sample right on it and it will automatically take it up into her body.

Not all roosters give up a sample very willingly, by the way. Some just will not, ever.. some will start to give a sample after several attempts, and some well.. are um, more than willing lol... So if you get nothing the first time, try again the next day. It does help if you are able to catch the rooster quickly rather than chasing him around. I suppose that's why some videos with birds kept in small cages make it seem so easy- they have no chance to get overly frightened and they are basically trained to respond and give a sample quickly.

Thanks, I had already decided not the turn the Tanks upside down. He didn't give me any samples today! lol I will try again tomorrow. The only girl I've seen him successfully mount was Reba

Ever watch Dirty Jobs where he goes to a turkey farm and they have him use a small glass bottle with which he had to suck on a straw to draw the 'samples' with another straw into the bottle?...
Wonder if that's how they really do it and why the heck wouldn't they have a motorized version? !!
:-D

Well I don't want fertilized eggs that bad, I had a syringe.

@NanaKat think I'll take you up on them Egyptian walking onions. I'll pm you when I get home. I can never remember our address, I even gave a guy from craigslist buying tires our old address, luckily it was only a mile from us and he eventually found me from my description of our house and pond Lol!
If you have any interest and don't have them I could send you some multiplier onions this fall if they do good.
Ohh, just remembered, I also got so I don't forget and put it off any longer besides the mangels and sweet meat squash, those pumpkins that have hulless seeds. Jung's have a hybrid kind now that get bigger than the original and say you can eat the pumpkin also, the original one's they have they say the pumpkins are only good for stock feed ) Our family loves pumpkin seeds, would be pretty cool to have hulless one's, been wanting to try growing them since I first heard about them.
