Okay, what is so wrong with Wyandottes? And what's so wrong with non-hatchery birds?

True to type Wyandottes are very big, very meaty, good egg layers, have a rose comb, very cold hardy, are large in size, are broody, and best of all they're very colorful. They come in Gold, Silver, Blue Laced Red, Silver Pencilled, Buff, Light Columbian, . . . What are we missing here?

Yes they fit perfect!

Okay about everything has been named, throw in a little Polish or Houdan for topknots and you'll about have them all covered!

For an all around cold hardy breed, I would like something with feathered feet. I like the crest idea, too! Wyandottes should just be thrown in the mix.

I am breeding a similar bird and will be using silkies to bring in the crests and feathered legs. Visit my page.

You would be suprised about that....

Illia Im not much of a Wyandotte fan. Ive thought about them but there is something about them that doesnt appeal to me. As for non hatchery birds, I dont want to buy a breeder quality bird because I cull for my needs not for the SOP. Also I dont want to be commited to that bird because they seem a lot like an investment rather than a farm animal. Just my 2 cents......

just joking...BUT..

Why not use 2 breeds of chickens?

Leghorns for eggs. Cornish X Rock for meat.

and hope you get a "broody hen".

Ha-Ha !!!

SORRY (sorta)...just clowning...again.

They are farm animals just because you get them from
A breeder does not mean they are not as productive they may not lay as many eggs as hatchery birds at first but they will lay longer.
You could just get culls if you don't want to invest much and get above hatchery quality birds

Yes I know that. I dont think that just because they are SQ means they will lay longer, if I raise my hatchery birds good I know they will productive as long as I give them adequate care.
