Wow...sounds like someone fell out of the chicken coop!..and landed in a extra large dung pile!Too bad you had to listen to that rubbish.I don't care what people like him think,I love to experiment too,I have the nicest EE rooster in the world,I get awesome crosses from him,I plan to get him a lot more ladies of varying breeds to breed my special crosses for my own use!I'll post pictures of his babies when I do it! and send the pictures to that mutt-allergic Moron while I'm at it!When you think about it crosses are a good thing in the buyers market!What if there's someone out there who can't decide between two breeds?Asks for a custom cross and Bingo! then buyer doesn't have to get two different hens and saves space!

I don't know if anyone said this on the thread yet, but crossing breeding different breeds is how new breeds are created, if we didn't do that the most variety of duck would just be minor genetic mutations of mallards

I prefer a mutt to a purebred chicken. There's a lot to be said about hybrid vigor. New, unrelated genes usually produce a better offspring. One of my favorite crosses was a Production Red roo to some commercial white leghorn rescues. The chicks were GORGEOUS, strong, and super healthy- until a fox attack. Fortunately I'd given some to a friend and they were his best chickens ever!

Right now I've got some red sex links, production reds, and australorps- will be crossing the australorp roos next spring with the reds.

Previously I hatched some eggs that were mutts- Mom was an ee/wellsummer and dad was an ee/silkie. The chickens were beautiful, great layers, and some of them had the 5 toes and black skin of the silkie. They laid beautiful olive colored eggs.

Last year I hatched my first chicks from my rooster and it was pretty funny how different they were compared to the breeds you get,my sister thought they were creepy,we had them in a box and they would peep quietly when they couldn't see us but when my sister showed her face to them they would shut up and stare quietly at you,personally I thought I had produced genius chickens as they were very quick learner's but very quiet and the cockerels were gentle like their daddy!their dad is my avatar and he produced pretty chicks,3 of them were a production red/EE cross and they had interesting coloration they were a red color with an almost tiger-like feather when they were chicks,but they grew up to be almost all red with a few odd white speckles around the body.

I found this thread because I know I'll be making some "mutts". I have two purebreed white silkies that are supposed to be pretty good quality I bought from a breeder. I bought 5 chicks hoping to have at lease a trio. 3/5 were roos and 1 of my hens recently passed though, with winter coming up I knew I needed at least one more warm body in the coop and the breeder wasn't selling any pullets so I went off to a local flea market that sells animals. I came home with a silver hamburg hen that is currently in quarantine, but couldn't find healthy good looking silkies!

I just ordered silkies from Ideal... I've heard mixed reviews on their birds but reading about them although they are a hatchery they still seem to try to get the best hens/roos for the breeds. In addition to the silkies I ordered 2 mystery bantams and 3 silver sebrights.
I definately plan on having at least a hamburg mix because I won't be getting a hamburg roo! I might have purebred sebrights though just depending on if I get at least a pair and how quiet the roo is ( I have close ish neighbors).
