I don't see why you can't have different breeds. They can run together until you want to hatch some purebreds. You simply pen the breeds separately to collect purebred eggs (you need to wait about 3 weeks to get eggs to hatch). That way, you preserve rare breeds while enjoying more than one type bird.

I like both purebreds and mixed birds. I've got a very interesting frizzled, naked neck whatchamacallit cockerel. He's not purebred, but it doesn't bother him one bit. He's got all the self-confidence in the world

Exactly. Both are spot on it.

Isolating the purebred for hatching eggs with the same breed (purebred) of roo in the flock is my strategy as well. I'm crossing him with another breed, intentionally, as well, but don't plan to sell any of those crosses. Even if I don't misrepresent the crosses, there's too big a chance that the buyer might somewhere down the line, so no, those crosses aren't leaving my property. I don't want anyone ever to have a reason to say I'm selling Mutts for Purebreds.

Speaking of mutts.. I've always wondered where white chickens came from. Or what the oldest chicken breed is. I don't think every chicken came directly from red jungle fowl, there has to be other old breeds.
