So my first question as I separate my flock between pens is what is an ideal hen to roo ratio for my silkies! I don’t want to give one roo too many that he can’t get the job done.

Also when breeding silkies would it be ideal to only breed to straight black to my paints or if I have a good white with good feet, dark eyes, and silver leakage would that be ideal??

I am still figuring out genetics and I want some amazing paints! As seen in photo my current roo is beautiful but very smutty!

Hi there, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

I had fun playing with Paint Silkies for a few years. While you can work on breeding the basics toward the SOP... paint is a project color and not currently accepted into the APA as far as I know. Sounds like you have a good basic understanding though as far as looking at toe color and all.

I personally don't mess around with breeding anyone with leakage if I can help it. A few links from when I was studying paint genetics..

One rooster can cover quite a few hens.. not less than 10.

I sold of my Silkie breeding stock before getting result from my paint rooster over dominant white hens which *should* give 100% paint chicks.

I like to mix it up... keeping maybe a black roo with paint hens, or a paint roo over the black, paint, and dominant white hens. In other word two pens with the ability to swap... Or a stag pen and a hen pen and just put the stag I want with the hens for the day and swapped back to the stag pen before the following day so he could maintain his place in the pecking order... giving new understanding of what is meant by another member who calls themselves "chicken juggler". :p

Happy chickeneering! :wee

Paint rooster over dominate white hens would only give you 50% paints and 50% whites.
To get 100% paints you need dominate white over black.
Paints remind me of BBS breeding. Works the same way which I never liked where if you want 100% of desired color (paint or blue) you have to breed the two unwanted colors together.

Oh my lands that makes no logical sense! I would have thought if I breed my 2 paints I would get more paints than if I bread a split white and split black lol

Paint to paint = 50% paint, 25% white, 25% black
Black to paint = 50% paint and 50% black
White to paint = 50% paint and 50% white
White to black = 100% paint
White is two copies of dominate white
Paint is one copy of white
Black is no copy of white
