Breeding pheasants

As far as I know all pheasants breed on the ground but I believe all but the tragopans nest on the ground. I am not sure though, I have little experience but hopefully someone else will lend their insight.

MOST PHEASANT SPECES ARE GROUND NESTERS... THEY PREFER TO SELECT WHAT THEY FEEL IS THE SAFEST SPOT WITHIN THEIR DOMAIN AND WILL SCRATCH OUT A SHALLOW DEPRESSION IN THE GROUND AND LAY/ BROOD THERE IF ALLOWED AND BROODY.

Give them choices, both on the ground with tree branches and baskets and boxes hanging. They will choose their spot.Just make sure you have them in before they start to lay.

When given the chance, over 50% will nest off the ground. Our Tragopans have always only nested off the ground.

For pheasant nests off the ground a basket or box that is open topped should be used. We use plastic rubbermaid tubs as nest for our's. We place about 2 inches of sand in the bottom of the tub and then some straw and wood shavings. The sand works to keep the corners full & keep the hen from digging down to the plastic so the eggs are not rolling around.
