We have a mixed flock of birds. 11 total birds. Rhode Island, Plymotuh, americana aricunas and orpington. We just adopted a leghorn roo. The flock will be 2yr old this coming spring.
We have been discussing about getting one breed and sticking to that breed. Wife and I put in three breeds apiece and had the youngest draw three out of a hat. We then tossed those 3 peices of paper back into the hat and had the 3yr old pick one. Wife won and the breed is speckled sussex.
We are wanting to breed enough to replenish the flock. I am wanting to order 24 birds and two roosters. The old smaller coop will house the older birds until they are turned into chicken stock. My new coop will have enough room to segrate birds for this prupose. Any roos rasied will be eaten and the hens kept to replenish the flock. The hens that go broody will hatch and raise the new birds.
I guess what I need is a breeding program so that I am not inbreeding my birds. Any direction would be nice.
