Breeding question!?

When crossing a dominique and a barred rock...which comb is dominant?...
also....if you have a dominique/ rhode Island red crossed rooster and he has a rose comb....if he is bred with a barred rock hen which is more likely a rose comb..or a single comb?

If the Dominique is pure for rose comb (RR) then all of the offspring will have rose combs. The Dominique/RIR x Barred Rock =half single comb half rose comb.

Little different than what I had surmised....since i would have chicks with a 1/2 rose, 1/2 single father...and a 100% single comb mother, I had expected the percentage to be more along the lines of 75% single 25% rose.......lotz to learn!!!!!

If you are working with hatchery stock it is going to be a try and see thing because most hatcheries are crossing Dominique and Barred Rock.

I will assume that your R.I. Red was a Single Comb and not the Rose Comb variety. You will get a percentage of both but mostly single comb. Both comb types will suffer greatly by the crossing, example you will get Single Combs that are Fatter, have more points, and shorter in height than they should be. With the Rose Combs they will be very narrow, very tall, poor point placement, and will tend to be Dbl. spiked.

I did not actually see the parents of my Dom/RIR rooster....although his comb is along the description you make( for a rose/ single comb cross). He was obtained for his delicate, tiny barbed, and fine neck feathers, and length, and barb count of his saddle hackle. He is a close crele in color, and I am seeking to get offspring from him in the barred rock color, while keeping his feather traits I desire.​

Sound like you are breeding in the lines of using there saddle feathers for Fly's (Fishing Fly's) then right?

Sound like you are breeding in the lines of using there saddle feathers for Fly's (Fishing Fly's) then right?

Yes, that is one of my ultimate goals...I and my family are avid fly fishermen/persons. Eggs, meat, pets and a few lines of selective colors, feather length, and barb count for my fly tying. Grizzly( Grey Barred), and cree ( or crele for chicken color) being my first projects.
