so i have 6 rsl and i plan on breeding them next spring... and I'm starting to wonder what kind i want to breed them with...i want to have something with a flashy pattern r something funky such as a silkie or barred rocks. does anyone have a suggestion to end up with a awesome chicken?

Whatever you end up mating them with will still result in 50% of the offspring being white as the genetic make-up of the RSL involves one dominate white parent (the dam). None the less you could still end up with some interesting combos from them though. Pretty much a guessing game at what you will get, As per Forest Gump and his box of chocolates.

haha thanks and rsl's are red sex links

We just bought 6 thirteen mo old red chickens. The seller said they were Rhoad Island Reds that lay large brown eggs. However, after reading this blog on the type of eggs they lay it looks like I have 6 Red Sex Links. That is fine with me but it has been two weeks and no eggs yet. However my husband was outside and says we have one who is spending a lot of time in a nest so maybe we will soon be getting eggs!!!

I was outside a couple of days ago and watched one of them lay down on its SIDE. Then another hen came over and laid down by its tummy and just layed there. I got close enough to take a picture (which I understand I can not post until I have 20 comments) and then they both got up. I was concerned that the one on its side was dying. But they are all still doing fine. Anyone have any idea what they were up to? I have never seen anything like it before.

Breeding RSLs really puts you at the deep end of the gene pool. The RSL, well most of them, are already a 4 way cross of grandparent birds. So, anything you put over them just adds to the mix. The unpredictable offspring will be grand mixes, that is for certain.

i did a whole photo thread, following the breeding of sex links down through a couple of generations. You might find it interesting and helpful to page through it. Some of the early photos are missing, but there's lots of good photos as the thread moves along.
