Plan to get some Spitzhauben chickens soon, I really like the feathers on top of their head. My question is can you cross those with a Road Island Red and still keep the feathers on their head? What would the chickens turn out to look like, and what color of egg would they lay?

They will lay very light brown eggs, the crests will not stay, and their color will depend on mother vs father of who's the Spitzhauben and who's the Production Red. They'll end up either orangey spangled, silver spangled, or golden spangled.

What can I do to keep the feathers on top, but have a variation of colors with out having to buy other Spitzhaubens of different colors?

Okay, I am new to this game. What do you mean by F1? I planned on breedding the Spitzhauben heen to a Road Island Red.

Why do you say the crest will not stay? Crest is dominant. A bird who is het. for crest will typically have a smaller crest than one who has two copies, but it will have a crest.

Everyone that has chickens gets to breed them as they see fit. That is understood.

What I don't understand is why you want to take a rare breed and then ruin it with such a cross? Unless, you are doing a grading project. But based on your question to Illia you are obviously new to breeding; nothing wrong with that as everyone has to start somewhere. I'm just curious.
