When is a hen likely to go broody?, like after being mated and laying eggs, or do they get broody at a certain time of month, please help me out here?

After laying a certain amount of eggs, it varies how many. It doesn't matter wether they have mated or not with a drake, they just start to brood when there Re enough eggs.
