Hello, I plan on getting several new chickens this coming spring. I haven’t had the best luck lately with my flock. Went from 9 to 3 in just a few weeks. Mostly from predators but some from the severe winter too. So I was wondering what breeds would be best for Michigan’s cold winters but warm/hot summers.

Leghorns will do fine in cold and hot weather, in the winter apply Vaseline to their comb and wattles to prevent frostbite. Brahmas, Orpingtons, Buckeyes, Easter Eggers, Ameraucanas, Salmon Faverolles, Dominiques, & Australorps will all do fine in the winter and summer.

My Jersey Giants do well in the heat and cold. Though I don't live in Michigan. Your best best would be to buy local that way you know several generations of that particular flock have tolerated those tough Michigan winters.

I've had the best experience with black sex-links and brahmas. The links lay practically forever - I've got one who's four right now and she still competes with the year olds. And you know how much I love brahmas. :P Not the greatest summer chicken, but as long as they're cared for mine have done fine. :)

I don't have experience in the North as I'm here in Georgia, but I've read that Australorps, Silkies, Plymouth Rocks, Dorkings, Cochins are all cold-hardy. If you have a TSC, that would be one suggestion.

Thanks, I think it’s too wet for silkies where I live but the rest are a possibility if I can find them. Thank you!
