breeds for showing

I have two frizzled Cochins that are in the same pen with my Silkies and I would say they are very calm too but I think the Silkies are in first place. By the way my two boys are showing the Silkies and Cochins in the local youth fair for 4H.

MHO is that the child should choose the breed that appeals to him or her--if you choose the breed, they will have less interest than if they choose it.

Edited to add--my grandaughter will be entering her first show at the end of the month. She will have two of my silkies and a bantam brahma to show. Her favourite chickens are crosses, so I told her that she could use one of them for showmanship, but for exhibition she needed to choose from the purebreds.

My silkie is the sweetest bird in the entire flock. However, my Ameraucana pair are obsessed with me. They fly right at me and fight for a place on my shoulder. The roo is a little large to be doing that anymore, but it doesn't stop him. So I can recommend either breed. If it is for showing, go to the Ameraucana Breeders Club website for information about features that disqualify.

Mahonri, my roo has so little white in him and his feathers are smooth gun metal blue. I mean really BLUE, not just a greyish. I hope it comes across i nthe pics. Your hen is adorable and your roo's neck feathers are as vivid as mine.

I agree, There is no difference in breeds when it comes to showing, every breed has its own twinks and twisted and each person has there own favorite breed to work with. Personally mine is Silkies and cochins. I also like Call ducks as well if not better. But one of my friends that shows likes Americanas and Cochin. Another likes Old english and brahmas. The point is me being a Jr. exhibitor and breeder and this being my last year Ive went through this recently and personally have experienced it and the breeds I breed and raise interest me the most but they dont interest some of my friends and they raise breeds I show no interest in. I would look up a show near you and take your child to it and let them pick out what breed interest them the most, and talk to a judge have them explain ( after judging of course) what to look for in the breed and find out some breeders that tend to show and win more frequently and see if they have anything availible for a Jr. exhibitor. This would give your child a chance to make his/her own decision. Also when buying for show always buy the best you can find and afford and improve through breeding, not buy the first bird that comes to you and try to breed from scratch, it takes years to do this.

Hope you and your child find the right choice

Bestof luck
