I think Silkies are a bad show starter bird for young children, You could them from a hatchery and the will be only PQ but if you want a bird that will compete then you would want SQ or BQ AND SQ Silkies are one of the most expensive birds I've seen, even the BQ ones are expensive. Seramas are also a bad choice because they are not recognized so will not compete with anyone except the other Seramas. My first few years showing I had bad quality birds and had a not so fun expierince, I won nothing for atleast 3 years and it was very depressing, I watched the other kids walk away with boxes of trophies and plaques and then there was me LOL. I would want every kid to have a good expierince with showing, so start out with a bird that does not have as many birds the same breed entered(Silkie devision is the hardest to win). Salmon Faverolles are a great starter bird, because they are not as expensive, very small amount of them at shows so it would be easier to win BV or BB which is a great acomplishment for a young child.

I agree! I have also had silkies bite and peck me and none of my faverolles have ever done this even the roosters.

I Believe Polish Would Be A Good Start, The Hens Are Very Tame,
And All The Kids In My Family Love Them, And Their Crest/ Puffy Feathers On Their Heads.

she is not going to raise sq chick because it is to late this year so she is raising barred rock from a farm store. there is 5 chick more stuff a bote them are on my post call NEW CHICKS

i personally played around and had just a hodge podge of chickens for awhile before i started showing so i could figure out which ones i liked. i finally after a year and a half decided what i wanted. i personally would suggest you play around and get a bunch of cheaper ones to just get a feel for their personality and their habits and things. i finally settled on ameraucanas and easter eggers. then ive always had the swedish ducks, and today i aquired 4 seramas!
