Have some new pictures of the chicks now, at 1 week old. Any thoughts? Supposed to have 8 females, 1 male (the one with the greenish dot on his head I assume; looks like a RIR), but received 10 total.

I'm a little stumped with the black ones - should all be females, but the larger yellow/white spots on the their heads is confusing me. I think I have 2 RIRs, one male and one female. One brown leghorn? Two easter eggers vs something else? Not sure on the yellow one.

Thanks for the help!

Oh interesting, welsummer eh? So hard to tell with the chipmunks! I have been debating Australorp vs barred rock. They have some light black on the legs, but not much. Delaware isn't one I thought of so I'll look that up.

Welsummer or brown leghorn. Both have yellow legs. The ones with barring on the wings are barred rock if the legs are yellow. Pink they would be marans. Australorp have pink legs.

More pictures as their wing feathers are coming in quickly! The black ones didn't want to cooperate for pics tonight. But thinking one could also be a black jersey giant vs barred rock or Australorp. Brown ones are going to be just gorgeous I think. Still can't tell brown leghorn vs welsummer. Still don't know about the yellow one.

One of your striped chicks is a speckled sussex. You can see small white speckles growing on the shoulder and wing feathers. The other looks more like a brown leghorn to me, but it could be a welsummer. Your white chick is an Amberlink because of the the salmon colored feathers coming in. The black chicks are definitely barred rocks because of they have white spots on their heads.

I totally considered speckled sussex because of those little white spots, but didn't even think to hope I got one of those! This is just the cackle hatchery sustainable prepper mix - so I expected to receive basic/common breeds. Ah, an amberlink might be possible - but I thought the females would have a little more red and males would be more white (I'm supposed to have all females, 1 male which is a RIR and was marked). I have a few other buff orpington chicks and this girlie just didn't look quite the same. I really love the black ones - a couple with the big yellow spots on the heads are just sooooo calm and friendly.

Tincture of time on the brown leghorn vs welsummer! Should eventually be distinguishable.

The black ones with white spots on the heads look like cuckoo marans. Is that a possibility? But then again Barred rocks also look like that!:) This photo is a cuckoo Marans!

Haha, exactly the problem! In general I think I see at least 2 barred rock, but the other two... who knows I suppose. Possible jersey giant, australorp or cuckoo maran? There was some suggestions about looking at the feet color- they all look yellow to me, no pink. So most likely barred rocks.

I'll keep updating with photos as they grow!

Feet/leg color can change as they get older, too. :)
Example: my polish chicks had yellowish orange legs at hatch but have sinced turned to grey legs with pink feet.
My sex link had pink legs at hatch, but are now orange!
