Hi there,

Totally new to this forum but loving it so far! I live on a 50 acre farm and we are hoping to to add some chickens. I love Silkies and Polish's and plan on having a few of them in our flock- i also know they are not the best egg producers and produce smaller eggs. Which is fine by us they would be more pets then anything. We do however want a few good egg layers but we want a breed that wont pick on the smaller birds. I love the look of speckled sussex's, Wyandottes and Orpingtons.. Would any of these breeds work? any other suggestions?

I have 3 polish and 10 silkies. I keep my polish with the rest of the flock. The polish rooster actually has the biggest spurs out of any of my roosters, but luckily he is a big baby. Before i only had one silkie and she stayed in the big coop too. I never had any problems with it. I have a tom turkey, americauna, black sex link, sapphire gem, a little banty rooster, and some other hens. We got our new polish hen the other day. We just threw her in with the rest of them. They fought at first, as it always is with new hens, the rooster doesn't care at all. They figured it out shortly after and the polish did fight back. The silkies stay in a seperate pen. Just for the fact they're still babies right now. I might just leave them on their own though.

I have 2 silkies and 4 polish in a flock of 30+ birds consisting of various breeds and mixes (listed in my signature) and have never had any drams, just the usual sorting out of the pecking order. I find raising bantams or heavily crested birds with large fowl helps since they buddy up regardless of size
