Breeds that get along with Wyandottes

But the OP doesn't have an established flock. OP is asking what breed to get as a friend.

I would get an aggressive breed like a RIR. I have had GLWs in the past (still have one and she is the dominant hen of my group, but she is also much older than her mates), and they are all a bit grumpy and bossy. I think a RIR might be able to hold its own against a GLW as long as they are around the same age/size. Size is more important than age.

Good luck.

RIR are aggressive? I have one, and she is darling! She sometimes is skittish, but not too bad. I had the friendliest Rhode Island Red rooster, but I've heard that is rare. I got them from Meyer's Hatchery.

You should call yourself lucky. RIR roos are notoriously nasty, and I can attest to the truth in that. I culled all the RIRs out of my flock- male and females because they were so mean to the rest of the flock, and human aggressive. I also helped my neighbor cull all hers (same hatchery, different hatch) for the same general reasons. I had heard that RIRs were a good staple bird to add to a mixed flock, so I got them to add to mine. I was greatly surprised and dismayed with how they turned out, but being ever the optimist, I just thought I got an aggressive batch from the hatchery. I have since spoken to many others that have had similar experiences with RIRs. Part of what makes them so successful is that they are "plucky" which I have figured out is a nice way of saying aggressive.

I am happy you have a good one. Treasure her because they aren't all as sweet as her.

I'll agree that the reds are aggressive but I have 25 hens & one Roo & if you spend alot of time with them they can be great chickens & good egg layers. I'm gonna hatch more real soon. I need 30 more & a few more roos. I like red chickens,

I’m baffled. Every description I’ve read about the Wyandottes states they’re calm and peaceful!

I got mine because of that description and i have to say not so much. My Buff Orpingtons are calm and peaceful. My Wyandottes are bold and sassy. I love them because of that! Whenever I'm out with them i can count on one or both of my silvers pullets to come over and ask me just what i think I'm doing. Pretty soon I'll have all of them checking it out. What amazes me is that i have a little gold runt whom they almost never bother. They can be pushy with each other and this morning they taught the Orpingtons a thing or two (no injurious behavior only the odd peck or two). I'm currently integrating a two year old hen and she's settled down now that everyone acknowledges she's the boss. Okay i could go on and on because im in love but i like them. They even nest with each other in the dirt bath spot when their crops are full and they have intimidated the BOs back to their own coop and run! :love
