shipped eggs almost never have a good hatch rate
if they flew on a plane 25% hatch is about all you can hope for
i have even had a whole dozen turn out to be a bust :(
If the eggs are packed correctly and fertile from the Breeder they hatch very well.

Most Breeders do not seem to care or believe:

So much depends on when they are shipped and how they are packed. I had a 100% hatch rate from Basque eggs I ordered from Skyline Poultry and 10/12 hatch rate from Chiqitas Bresse eggs plus other success stories. If the eggs are packed right, and not shipped when it is too hot or too cold, they should hatch fairly well.. assuming of course that they are fertile to start with!
Yes! You believe and pack well! I had a 70% hatch rate from eggs you shipped me.

the ones i just hatched (game birds) were packed well
but it was a cold week up north here.
i could have waited to order them but i wanted to get my new crosses started
& i didn't want to wait till May so i forged ahead.

i know there is a big difference between ground freight & air freight

when we are talking shipped eggs.

if they go by air the air sacks can really get messed up

I have had a lot of eggs shipped to me over the last three years. I also participated in the Great Egg shipping experiment(click the link in my Siggy).

My conclusion is that flying is not the problem--the distance from the Regional Post office to the Airport makes a big difference. There also seems to be a problem at some Airports too. USPS uses Airborne to fly the eggs so there is a transfer to them and from them when the eggs need to fly to make Priority shipping speed.

Packed well is the skyline method. The eggs need to be wrapped up like burritos with the big end up and the egg suspended in the middle of the burrito. All space needs to be filled it with packing nuggets or shredded paper. Air pillow wrap all around the outside. Then the box needs to go into a second box similarly packed.

Vibration is what causes them to not hatch. There is only so much energy in an egg so if it is shocked too much it takes more energy to hatch. Damage can be lessened by the packing and also hatching techniques.

Critical:

1 Get the egg into an incubator as soon as they are warmed up. No 24 hour resting
2. put them into the incubator with the big end up and do not turn them for up to 6 days.
3. Do not handle them during those 6 days. Start turning them on the 6trh day and candle them on the 7th day.
4. Set them up for hatching on the 18th day upright in cartons or in hatching trays.

I hope this helps with shipped eggs! When possible, get the seller to do this stuff! It will make a big difference.

these game eggs were double bubble wrapped big end up

everything was tight inside that box

i had a tough time removing the 1st egg from the packing

i rested them for 1 day

then they went in the sportsman but not on the turning racks

after 3 more days i put them on the turner.

a couple blood rings, 1 early quitter

+ there were clears :(

this left me with 4 eggs

3 looked "good" the 4th was a question mark

the 3 good ones all hatched out within a couple hours of each other

Florida to new hampshire is a long ride for eggs +/- 1500 miles

next time i'll try resting them in the bottom of the bator (the full 6 days)

i'll see what i get. (have to get more eggs)

one of my 2 Breese hens took sick (frozen feet)

must have stepped into the water or something out in her coop (never had that problem before)

lost her toenails on 1 foot

my wife who is a nurse did her best to save the poor thing

it was not to be so with only 1 Breese hen it looks like i'll need some

npip eggs come spring

Edit:
never heard of hatching with eggs in a carton but i'll try anything once

if i don't get the results i like i can go back to the way i have done it in the past

if it gives me the results i want then i'll not be wanting to go back

Sorry about all of the problems. Clears are usually not fertile eggs so that is a breeder problem and not related to shipping and incubation. Blood rings are usually bacteria that gets into the eggs and can be caused by poor flock health.

How many were clears? Last year I had up to 80% clears and the eggs were brought to me. The person that I was hatching for was having problems with the Rooster.

If you have a lot of clears the Seller might send you another batch.

I paid for 6 & they sent a dozen so i was happy all & all with my purchase
i think 5 or 6 ended up being clear if i recall
we mostly only hatch out own buff & imported english orpington eggs
so the eggs only have to travel 125' from coop to house.

however not every breed we want can be found rite in our little state.
so then we get into shipped eggs arriving in the mailbox out front

oh 1 more thing before i bed down for the night Ron
we had a bunch of clear english orpington eggs a couple months ago
after a little butt trimming clears are few & far between.
my rooster couldn't "hit the mark" (english orpingtons are very fuzzy in the bottom)
but now he is back on the case

The Breeder here was able to get fertility up by trimming and changing the breeding pen arrangement. I am going to start hatching for her again this week and am hoping that there will not be that many clears.

I hope your hatches go well this year!

Get some Bresse from @chiqita she does a good job with her shipments.
