Bresse Chickens

BTW I'm getting the white bresse hatching eggs from sapphire farms, if anyone has information about their experiences with them? They seem legitimate.

They should be here (24+eggs) within 24 hours. I'm very hopeful.

Ok. I got 30 eggs shipped to me from Sapphire Farms on Monday. They were individually wrapped well in bubble wrap, none were cracked or broken. That is the good news. Each egg had a significant amount of poop stuck on it.

a friend came over and it took us both an hour to carefully wash each egg and inspect it. I put other eggs from my flock as a control.

. Is this normally how shipped hatching eggs get sent? I let them rest pointy side down for 24 hours before putting them in the incubator yesterday.

It is very hard to get clean eggs in the winter. It's been wet for weeks here.

Most people do not wash hatching eggs before shipping.

I ordered several batches of hatching eggs last year and most had some dirty ones.

In that situation I would probably brush them off as much as possible, mist with oxine solution then start incubation without turning.

If they are very dirty, I use Mana pro egg wash. It has instructions on the bottle for washing hatching eggs. I have washed dirty eggs and they hatch normally.

Turning depends on the aircell. If the air cells are not detached, start turning right away. Eggs with detached air cells have, at best, a 25% chance of hatching and can be helped with incubating for up to three days without turning. Check the air cell after two days to see if it is stable.

My guess is that the air cells are fairly good if the eggs were packed correctly.

When I have needed to wash hatching eggs, I use water temp warmer than the eggs. and then rinse in a diluted solution of bleach. Let air dry. ( had a hen squish a few eggs and the yolk and albumen good other eggs in the nest).

When I researched cleaning eggs versus not cleaning, it is about weighing the pros and cons. REmember the commercially set eggs are all washed before setting. IF the dirst and goo is from my farm I don't get too concerned, When it is from another farm, I prefer to clean the eggs if they are very dirty.

I've been trying to collect eggs in the morning at let out for free ranging. I noticed those are the cleanest eggs. At the afternoon collection, ewwww, some eggs are remarkably dirty. Night and day. IT is a bit muddy hear by the afternoon.

I'm putting fresh litter in the nest boxes every day. It's so wet and mucky right now they mess them up with their feet. My Dominiques have a longer ramp on their coop and their nests don't get dirty quite as quickly.
