Ducks need more niacin than feeds generally offer - the brewers yeast is used as a niacin supplement. I don't believe chickens need the extra, but I don't think it harms them either. This is interesting, I knew there was brewer's yeast in my feed but I never gave it any thought. Do people feed yeast directly to chickens and ducks? Is that for B vitamins and gut flora?
How much would you feed?
A fantastic idea! Breweries must discard their yeast every few batches of beer. I've spent a lot of time in breweries and (if it's a small one) I've never met a brewer who wouldn't happily give away the old yeast. When they do get rid of it, a single 30 bbl fermenter will probably have a couple hundred pounds of yeast slurry that has to be tossed. A few really cool brewers will even share their yeast with homebrewers
There are a lot of upsides to having friends that are commercial brewers![]()
